Yes, letting a friend copy homework that is meant to be their own work is generally haram, because it helps them cheat. Helping them understand it, studying together where your teacher allows it, or sharing notes is fine and even rewarded.

Why copying counts as cheating

When a teacher sets individual homework, the agreement is that each student hands in their own work. Copying breaks that agreement and gives the teacher a false picture of what your friend knows. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever cheats us is not one of us" (Sahih Muslim 101). Islam takes honesty seriously in small things as well as big ones. See Is it haram to cheat on exams?

Helping someone do wrong

You might think, "I'm not the one cheating." But Islam also looks at the help we give. Allah says:

And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." Quran 5:2

Handing over your answers so someone can pass them off as their own is cooperating in a wrong. It can also get you in trouble: many schools and universities punish both students for plagiarism or collusion.

What is allowed

  • Explaining: walking your friend through how you solved a problem so they can do it themselves.
  • Group work: working together when the task is set as group work or your teacher says collaboration is fine. See Can I work in mixed group projects as a Muslim?
  • Sharing notes from a class they missed, so they can learn the material.
  • Checking answers after you've both finished, if that's allowed.

The test is simple: does my help make them learn, or does it let them pretend?

How to say no without losing a friend

Saying no can feel awkward, especially to a close friend. Try something kind and honest: "I can't send you my answers, but I'll sit with you for twenty minutes and show you how I did it." Most friends respect that, and you're offering something more valuable. If they keep pressuring you, it's okay to hold your line. The same applies to tools that write work for you; see Can I use AI to write my school or work assignments as a Muslim?

If you already let someone copy

Don't panic. Make sincere tawbah (repentance), decide not to do it again, and if you can, help your friend learn the topic properly now. Allah is Most Forgiving to those who turn back to Him.
