Yes, lying on a resume is haram. Inventing degrees, job titles, dates or skills is deception, and the salary you earn through it rests on a false basis. Presenting your real experience in its best light, though, is completely fine.

Why it counts as lying and cheating

A resume is a statement of facts that an employer relies on to decide whether to hire you. Making things up there is lying, and it also cheats the employer and the honest candidates you compete with. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever cheats us is not one of us" (Sahih Muslim 102). He also warned that lying is one of the signs of a hypocrite (Sahih al-Bukhari 33), and that "truthfulness leads to righteousness... and lying leads to wickedness" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094).

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ "O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are truthful." Quran 9:119

Polishing vs. lying

Islam doesn't ask you to undersell yourself. There's a clear line between presenting yourself well and making things up:

  • Fine: using strong action verbs, highlighting achievements, leaving out an old irrelevant job, describing volunteering or caring for family as real experience.
  • Not fine: a degree you didn't finish, a job title you never held, stretched dates to hide a gap, fake references, or "fluent" in a language you barely speak.

The Prophet ﷺ compared someone who shows off what he hasn't been given to a person "wearing two garments of falsehood" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5219). Claiming skills you don't have is exactly that. The same principle applies to official paperwork. See Is it haram to lie on government forms?

What if I already lied to get my job?

Repent sincerely, stop adding new lies, and correct the record where you reasonably can. Many scholars say that if you are genuinely able to do the job well, the salary for real work done is yours, but the deception itself needs tawbah. If the lie was about a qualification the job legally requires (like a medical or engineering license), the situation is more serious and you should speak to a knowledgeable imam. A similar principle covers cheating in education. See Is it haram to cheat on exams?

Trust Allah with your provision

It's tempting to lie when the job market is tough. But your rizq is written, and a job gained through honesty carries barakah. Being upfront about a gap ("I took a year to care for a parent") is often respected by employers anyway.

Key points
  • Fake degrees, titles or dates are haram deception.
  • Presenting real experience well is allowed.
  • If you lied before, repent and fix what you can.
  • Honest provision carries barakah.
Tip: Before sending your resume, read each line and ask, "Could I comfortably explain this in an interview?" If the answer is no, rewrite it until it's true.
