Yes, lying to the police is haram. Islam forbids lying in general, and lying to officials can also harm innocent people and break the law. But you don't have to volunteer everything: staying silent, asking for a lawyer or politely declining to answer is not lying.

Honesty is a core Muslim value

The Prophet ﷺ said that truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise, while lying leads to wickedness and wickedness leads to the Fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094). Lying to a police officer is still lying. It doesn't become acceptable because the officer isn't Muslim or because you dislike the police.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوا۟ قَوَّٰمِينَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ شُهَدَآءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوِ ٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ وَٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ "O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives..." Quran 4:135

Silence is not a lie

In the UK, Europe and the USA you usually have the right to remain silent and to speak to a lawyer before answering questions. Using that right is completely permissible. There's a big difference between:

  • "I'd like to speak to a lawyer first" or "No comment": allowed.
  • "I was at home all night" when you weren't: a lie, and forbidden.

Islam also values covering private faults that harm no one else. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever covers a Muslim's fault, Allah will cover his faults on the Day of Resurrection (Sahih al-Bukhari 2442). So you aren't obliged to confess every past sin to the authorities, but you mustn't invent false stories either.

Protecting others

  • Never lie to shield a criminal who has hurt someone. Justice for the victim comes first. See Can I report a crime by another Muslim to the police?
  • Never blame an innocent person. That combines lying with oppression, which is far worse.
  • If someone's life is in real danger, for example fleeing violence or persecution, scholars discuss rare exceptions. In those cases, speak to a lawyer and a trusted imam rather than deciding alone.

Everyday encounters

Most contact with police is a traffic stop, a witness statement or reporting a theft. Be calm, polite and truthful. If you're unsure of a detail, say "I don't remember" rather than guessing. Islam asks you to keep fair laws of the country you live in. See Do I have to follow the laws of my country as a Muslim? The same honesty applies to paperwork. See Is it haram to lie on government forms?

Key points
  • Lying to the police is lying, and lying is haram.
  • Staying silent or asking for a lawyer is permitted.
  • Never shield someone who harmed others, or blame the innocent.
  • In genuine danger, get legal and religious advice.
Tip: Learn your basic legal rights before you ever need them. Knowing you can say "I'd like a lawyer" calmly makes it much easier to stay honest under pressure.
