Yes, deliberately plagiarizing is wrong in Islam. Passing off someone else's work as your own is dishonest and breaks the trust between you and your school. An honest mistake, such as a missing citation, is different, because Allah does not hold us to account for errors we make without meaning to. If you are stuck, there are honest ways to get help.

Why plagiarism is wrong

Plagiarism is a form of lying: you present words or ideas as yours when they are not. The Prophet ﷺ said that the one who pretends to have been given what he has not been given is like someone wearing two garments of falsehood (Sahih al-Bukhari 5219). He also said that whoever acts dishonestly towards us is not of us (Sahih Muslim 101). A student who signs a declaration that the work is their own has made a promise, and breaking it is a breach of trust.

وَّيُحِبُّونَ أَن يُحْمَدُوا۟ بِمَا لَمْ يَفْعَلُوا۟ "...and love to take credit for what they have not done..." Quran 3:188

This verse speaks about a particular group, but its lesson is clear: Islam dislikes claiming credit that you have not earned. For another example of the same principle, see Is it haram to cheat on exams?

What counts as plagiarism

  • Copying text from a website, book or classmate without quotation marks and a reference.
  • Changing a few words of someone's paragraph and presenting it as yours.
  • Buying an essay from an essay service or having someone else write it.
  • Reusing your old work without telling your teacher, where the rules forbid it.
  • Using AI text as your own when the course does not allow it.

AI tools raise the same honesty question. See Can I use AI to write my school or work assignments as a Muslim?

Forgetting a reference or citing badly is a skill problem, not a moral one. Ask your tutor or the writing centre for help with referencing, and correct it when you notice it.

Coping with deadline pressure

  • Start with an outline. Write five bullet points before you search for sources.
  • Quote and reference as you go. Add the source straight away, not at the end.
  • Ask for an extension honestly. Explain your situation to your tutor and do not invent an excuse.
  • Write badly first. A rough draft in your own words is better than a perfect copy.
  • Make dua and rest. Panic produces bad choices. Pray, take a break and then try again.

Asking for more time is allowed, but be truthful about why you need it. See Is it haram to lie to a teacher to get an extension?

If you already did it

If you copied in the past, stop, feel sincere regret and resolve not to repeat it, which is the heart of tawbah, repentance. If the work is still being marked, consider correcting it or telling your teacher. If it affected a qualification or job and you feel unsure what to do now, ask a trusted local imam. Key points
  • Deliberate plagiarism is dishonest and breaks trust (Sahih al-Bukhari 5219, Sahih Muslim 101).
  • Forgetting a reference by mistake is a skill issue, not a sin.
  • Quote, reference and use your own words, and ask for help or an extension.
  • If you have plagiarized, repent and correct it where you can.
Tip: Ask your university for its academic integrity or referencing guide. Many offer short online workshops that make correct citation easy.
