Is it haram to quit my job without notice?

It depends on your contract. If you agreed to give notice, walking out without it breaks a promise, which Islam takes seriously. But if your contract has no notice period, or you're facing abuse, danger or unpaid wages, leaving straight away can be completely fine.
Keeping your agreements
An employment contract is a promise, and the Quran opens Surah al-Ma'idah with a direct command:
The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Muslims are bound by their conditions" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3594), and he named breaking promises as a sign of a hypocrite (Sahih al-Bukhari 33). So if you signed up to give two weeks' or a month's notice, honoring that is part of your deen, not just HR policy.
When leaving immediately is okay
Islam also forbids harm, and a contract can't force you to stay in a harmful situation. Leaving without notice is generally excused when:
- You're being harassed, bullied or abused.
- Your safety or health is at real risk.
- Your employer has stopped paying you or broken the contract first.
- You're being pushed to do something haram. See Can I keep my job at a bar after becoming Muslim?
- Your employer agrees to release you early.
In many countries, including the UK and much of Europe, the law also allows you to leave at once in serious cases like these. In the US, "at-will" jobs often have no notice requirement at all, though two weeks is the expected courtesy.
What if I just can't face it?
If the job is simply boring or you've found something better, try to negotiate rather than vanish. Ask your manager to shorten the notice period, offer to hand over your tasks, or use leave you're owed. Most employers will meet you halfway. Ghosting a job leaves colleagues to carry your work, and that is a harm to them too.
Leaving for your faith
Some new Muslims need to change jobs because of the work itself, like serving alcohol or dealing with interest. Even then, it's best to leave in an orderly way while you look for something else, unless staying means doing clearly haram tasks every day. See Can I work at a bank as a Muslim?
- A notice period you agreed to is a promise to keep.
- Abuse, danger or unpaid wages excuse leaving at once.
- Negotiate a shorter notice if you need to go sooner.
- Leave in a way that doesn't harm your colleagues.
