Is it haram to record lectures without permission?

It depends on your university's rules. If recording is allowed, or you have permission, it's fine. If the rules or the lecturer say no, recording secretly breaks an agreement and a trust, which Islam takes seriously. When in doubt, just ask.
Keeping your agreements
When you enrol, you accept the university's rules, and many of them say whether lectures can be recorded. Islam treats agreements as binding:
The Prophet ﷺ also said, "Muslims are bound by their conditions" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3594). So if your course handbook or lecturer says "no recording," secretly recording anyway is breaking your word.
Private words are a trust
The Prophet ﷺ said that when a man tells you something and then looks around (to check who is listening), it is a trust (Sunan Abi Dawud 4868). A lecturer who shares personal stories, or classmates who ask questions in a small seminar, may not want that saved. Recording people secretly can also break data protection laws in Europe and, in some US states, laws on recording conversations.
When it's fine
- The university already records lectures and posts them online.
- The rules allow personal recording for study use.
- You have a disability or learning need and have an approved arrangement through student support. This is common and fully legitimate.
- You asked the lecturer and they said yes.
What to avoid even with permission
- Posting recordings online or sharing them outside the class.
- Selling recordings, which usually breaks copyright and university rules.
- Clipping someone's words to mock them. See Is it backbiting to complain about someone online?
- Using recordings or AI tools in ways your course counts as cheating. See Can I use AI to write my school or work assignments as a Muslim?

- Recording with permission or under the rules is fine.
