No, it is not haram. No authentic text forbids sleeping after Fajr. Some scholars see it as disliked (makruh) as a regular habit, because the early morning is a blessed time for remembrance and work. If you are tired, ill or working night shifts, a nap is perfectly fine, as long as you have prayed Fajr and don't miss other duties.

Is there a text that forbids it?

There is no Quran verse or sound hadith that makes sleeping after Fajr forbidden. Scholars who dislike it rely on the general merit of the early morning and on reports from some of the early Muslims. A dislike is not a prohibition: you are rewarded for choosing the better thing, but you do not sin if you rest. The most important part is that you prayed Fajr on time first.

Why the early morning is special

The Prophet ﷺ prayed: "O Allah, bless my people in their early mornings" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2606). The Companion who narrated it, Sakhr, was a trader who sent out his goods at the start of the day and became wealthy. So the early hours are a good time for work and for dhikr.

The Prophet ﷺ also used to sit where he had prayed Fajr until the sun had risen (Sahih Muslim 670). And he said that whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until sunrise and prays two rakat, receives a reward like that of Hajj and Umrah (Jami at-Tirmidhi 586). Many Muslims pray these two rakat, called ishraq, and use the quiet time to recite Quran or make dhikr.

But sleep is also a gift

Allah describes rest as part of His design:

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا "and made your sleep for rest, and made the night as a cover, and made the day for livelihood." Quran 78:9-11

If you only got a few hours of sleep, work nights or are looking after a baby, a nap after Fajr is not a sin. Rest keeps you healthy and able to worship. See Can I still sleep in on weekends as a Muslim?

Practical advice

  • Pray Fajr first, ideally on time and in congregation if you can.
  • Try dhikr or a short Quran portion after prayer, then rest if you need to.
  • Set an alarm so that a nap doesn't make you late for work, school or the sunrise ishraq prayer.
  • Go to bed earlier if you often need to catch up after Fajr.
  • Don't use it as an excuse to skip Fajr itself.
  • In Ramadan, a short sleep after suhoor and Fajr is common.

Key points
  • Sleeping after Fajr is not haram.
  • Some scholars find it disliked as a habit, because the early morning is blessed (Sunan Abi Dawud 2606).
  • Sitting in dhikr until sunrise has a great reward (Jami at-Tirmidhi 586).
  • A nap is fine if you need it, once Fajr has been prayed.
Tip: Try 15 minutes of dhikr or Quran after Fajr first. If you still feel tired, a short nap often feels better than a long one.
