No, it is not haram to touch a pig. Islam forbids eating pork, not touching the animal. Most scholars consider pigs ritually impure, so if you touch one with wet hands, wash your hands before you pray. It doesn't break your wudu, and there's no sin in it.

Eating is forbidden, touching is not

The Quran's prohibition is about eating pig meat:

لَحْمَ خِنزِيرٍ فَإِنَّهُۥ رِجْسٌ "...or the flesh of swine, for indeed, it is impure." Quran 6:145

There is no verse or authentic hadith that says touching a pig is a sin. So petting a pig at a farm, a school trip to a petting zoo, or working with pigs as a vet student isn't haram in itself. See Why can't Muslims eat pork?

Is a pig najis?

  • Hanafi, Shafi'i and Hanbali: a pig is impure (najis) in its whole body, alive or dead.
  • Maliki: every living animal is pure, including dogs and pigs. Only its meat, and a dead pig, are impure.

A key point all schools share: dry touching dry doesn't transfer impurity. If your hand and the pig are both dry, nothing needs washing. If either is wet, wash the place that touched before your next prayer.

How to wash after touching

Here scholars differ too:

  • Shafi'i and Hanbali: wash seven times, one of them with earth or soil, by analogy with a dog. The Prophet ﷺ said that a vessel a dog has drunk from should be washed seven times (Sahih al-Bukhari 172), and they apply that to pigs, which they see as worse.
  • Hanafi: wash like any other impurity, until it's gone (often three times).
  • Maliki: no washing needed after touching a living pig.

Today many people use soap or a clay-based wash in place of earth. See Does touching a dog break my wudu?

Does it break wudu?

No. Touching a pig, a dog or even pork doesn't break wudu in any school. Wudu is broken by things like using the toilet and deep sleep, not by touching an impure thing. You only wash the spot, not redo your wudu. See Does eating pork break wudu?

Key points
  • Touching a pig is not haram; eating pork is.
  • The majority see pigs as najis; the Malikis say a living pig is pure.
  • Dry contact needs no washing; wet contact needs washing before prayer.
  • Touching a pig never breaks wudu.
Tip: If your job or studies involve pigs, wear gloves and keep separate work clothes. That keeps things simple whatever view you follow, and your regular clothes stay ready for prayer.
