Yes, using a fake ID is haram. It combines lying, deception and breaking the law of the country you live in, and it's usually done to get something you aren't entitled to. If you used one in the past, sincere repentance wipes the slate clean.

Why a fake ID is a problem in Islam

A fake ID is a lie in plastic form. Every time you show it, you are telling someone something false to get them to act on it. Islam takes honesty very seriously. The Prophet ﷺ said that truthfulness leads to righteousness and righteousness leads to Paradise, while lying leads to wrongdoing and wrongdoing leads to the Fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094).

He also passed a market stall where the seller had hidden wet grain under dry grain, and said, "Whoever cheats is not of me" (Sahih Muslim 102). Showing a bouncer, a shop or an official a false card is exactly that kind of hidden deception.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُوا۟ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ "O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true." Quran 9:119

What it's usually used for

  • Getting into bars or buying alcohol underage. That adds a second problem, since alcohol is haram for Muslims at any age. See Can Muslims drink alcohol?
  • Fake work or residence papers. This is lying to the state and to employers, and can cost you far more than it gains.
  • Borrowing a friend's ID. Using someone else's real card is still pretending to be someone you're not.

It is also a crime in the UK, the EU and every US state, and Muslims are expected to keep the lawful agreements of the country they live in. See Do I have to follow the laws of my country as a Muslim?

What about real hardship?

Scholars allow some things under genuine necessity (darurah), such as a refugee fleeing danger who has no other way to travel. That is a narrow exception for saving life or safety, judged case by case with a knowledgeable scholar. It doesn't cover nights out, festivals or convenience.

If you already have one

Stop using it and destroy it safely. Make sincere tawbah: regret, stop, and resolve not to return. If you became Muslim after using one, your shahada already wiped that past sin. If you have used false details on official paperwork, it's worth reading Is it haram to lie on government forms?

Key points
  • A fake ID is a form of lying and cheating, so it's haram.
  • It also breaks the law of your country.
  • Only real life-or-safety necessity is treated differently.
  • Get rid of it and repent; Allah forgives.
Tip: If friends plan a night that needs a fake ID, suggest something everyone can join instead: a late dinner, bowling or a film. Real friends will come along.
