Yes, most scholars say it is haram to walk directly in front of someone who is praying, between them and their sutrah or the spot where they prostrate. Walking further away, or behind them, is fine. Small children and emergencies are treated gently.

The hadith behind the rule

The Prophet ﷺ said that if the person passing in front of someone praying knew how serious it was, it would be better for him to wait forty than to pass in front (Sahih al-Bukhari 510). The narrator wasn't sure whether he meant forty days, months or years, but the message is clear: it's a sin to avoid, not a minor courtesy.

The Prophet ﷺ also told the person praying to stop someone who tries to pass in front of him, gently at first, by putting out a hand (Sahih al-Bukhari 509). Most scholars therefore call passing in front haram, while some Hanafi and Maliki scholars call it strongly disliked. Either way, avoid it.

How close is "in front"?

  • If they have a sutrah (a wall, pillar, bag or chair in front of them), don't pass between them and it. Beyond the sutrah is fine. See Can I pray in the university library?
  • If they have no sutrah, many scholars say stay out of the area up to where they prostrate, roughly the length of a prayer mat plus a step.
  • In congregation, the imam's sutrah covers everyone behind him, so passing in front of the rows is lighter, though you should still avoid it when you can.

When it's allowed or excused

Many scholars make an exception for the very crowded areas around the Kaaba in Makkah, where avoiding it is almost impossible. Real need also counts: leaving a fire exit, reaching a sick child, or when there is truly no other way out. Toddlers who wander in front of a praying parent are not sinful. If you are the one praying

Help others avoid the mistake: pray near a wall or pillar, or place an object in front of you. Don't pray in a doorway, corridor or busy aisle at work or university. A prayer mat with a clear front edge also shows people where your space ends. See Do I need a prayer mat to pray?

Key points
  • Passing directly in front of someone praying is haram for most scholars.
  • Pass beyond their sutrah, or behind them, instead.
  • The imam's sutrah covers the rows in congregation.
  • Crowds around the Kaaba, real need and small children are excused.
Tip: If you need to get out and someone is praying in your way, just wait a minute. Most prayers are short, and the wait is a small price compared to the warning in the hadith.
