Yes, wasting food is disliked in Islam and can become sinful when it's careless or excessive. Food is a blessing from Allah, and the Quran warns against extravagance. Leftovers, spoiled food you couldn't avoid, and an occasional half-eaten plate are not the same as habitual waste.

What the Quran says

Islam doesn't ask you to eat less than you need. It asks you to enjoy food without going overboard.

وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ "And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess." Quran 7:31
إِنَّ ٱلْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوٓا۟ إِخْوَٰنَ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ "Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils." Quran 17:27

How the Prophet ﷺ treated food

  • He finished every bite. He told people to lick their fingers and clean the plate, because you don't know which part of your food holds the blessing (Sahih Muslim 2033). He also said not to wipe your hand until you have licked it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5456).
  • He picked up dropped food. If a bite falls, remove any dirt and eat it, and don't leave it for Shaytan (Sahih Muslim 2033).
  • He never criticised food. If he liked it he ate it, and if not he simply left it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5409).
  • He encouraged sharing. Food for two is enough for three, and food for three is enough for four (Sahih al-Bukhari 5392).

What counts as waste, and what doesn't

Scholars generally treat it as blameworthy when you regularly buy, cook or order far more than you'll eat and bin the rest. It is not sinful when food spoils despite your effort, when you leave food that is unsafe to eat, or when a child leaves half a plate. Throwing away food you dislike after one bite is better avoided: give it to someone else or save it.

Easy ways to waste less

  • Serve small portions and go back for seconds.
  • Plan the week's meals and use leftovers the next day.
  • Freeze bread, cooked rice and stews before they go off.
  • Give extra food to neighbours, a food bank or a mosque iftar. See Does giving charity make you poorer?
