Is it haram to watch UFC?

It depends. Scholars differ. Many say watching UFC and similar fights is best avoided, because the sport centers on striking the face and hurting people, and broadcasts often show immodest content. Others see casual watching of the sport itself as a grey area rather than clearly haram. Betting on fights is clearly haram.

Why many scholars are cautious

The Prophet ﷺ said: "If somebody fights (or beats somebody) then he should avoid the face" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2559). In UFC, the face and head are the main targets, and knockouts are the highlight. Many scholars say that if a sport is impermissible to take part in, enjoying it as entertainment and paying for it also isn't right, since watching supports and celebrates it.

Others point out that grappling, wrestling and martial skill have always been admired, and treat watching as disliked or a grey area rather than strictly forbidden, especially for fighters' technique. Both views exist, so you'll find sincere Muslims on either side.

What's on screen besides the fight

  • Ring girls: Scantily dressed models walk the octagon between rounds. The Quran asks believers to lower their gaze, so this is a real issue.
  • Awrah: Male fighters wear shorts, which usually cover navel to knee, but women's bouts and walkouts can be less covered.
  • Alcohol and gambling ads: Broadcasts are full of beer and sportsbook adverts.
قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ "Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is [fully] Aware of what they do." Quran 24:30

Betting is a clear no

Whatever view you take on watching, putting money on a fight is gambling, and that's haram by agreement (Quran 5:90). This includes fight-night betting apps, office pools with a cash prize, and parlays. See Can I still buy lottery tickets as a Muslim?

Finding a balance

If you were a big UFC fan before becoming Muslim, you don't have to feel guilty about the past. Many converts find a middle path:

  • Skip the ring-girl and ad breaks, or watch highlights instead of full broadcasts.
  • Choose grappling events (like BJJ or wrestling) that don't involve head strikes.
  • Avoid paying for pay-per-view if you take the stricter view.
  • Watch your heart: do you enjoy the skill, or do you enjoy seeing someone get hurt?

The same questions apply to any entertainment you watch. See Can I still watch horror movies as a Muslim?

If your friends watch fight night at a bar, you can join for the company and skip the drinks. See Can I go to a bar with friends if I only drink soda?

Key points
  • Scholars differ; many advise avoiding UFC because of face-striking.
  • Ring girls and immodest content mean lowering your gaze.
  • Betting on fights is haram.
  • Highlights, grappling events and skipping breaks are a middle path.
Tip: If you love the sport, put that energy into training a grappling art yourself. It's healthier than watching, and you'll meet people who share your interest.
