It depends. Making weapons for lawful defense is permitted in principle, because Islam allows a country to protect itself. It becomes haram when your work knowingly helps aggression, or supplies those who use weapons to oppress innocent people. Scholars differ on where modern defense jobs fall, so personal conscience matters too.

The basic principle

Islam doesn't treat weapons as evil in themselves. The Quran tells the Muslim community to prepare strength to deter enemies (Quran 8:60), and defending people from attack is legitimate. So designing, building or maintaining equipment for a lawful national defense isn't automatically haram. See Can I join the army as a Muslim?

The guiding verse for any job like this is about cooperation:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." Quran 5:2

Where it becomes a problem

  • Aggression: knowingly helping an unjust war or attacks on civilians.
  • Oppressors: selling or supplying weapons to regimes or groups known to use them against innocent people.
  • Indiscriminate weapons: many scholars are especially cautious about weapons designed to kill without distinguishing civilians from fighters.

The Quran treats taking an innocent life as one of the gravest sins (Quran 5:32), so being part of that chain is serious. See How do I understand the verses about fighting in the Quran?

What scholars say about modern defense jobs

Views differ. Some contemporary scholars say working for a defense company in your own country is permissible, because its products are mainly for national defense and the decisions about wars and exports are made by governments, not engineers. Others advise avoiding it where a company openly supplies conflicts with heavy civilian harm, since you'd be indirectly helping. Many also note that the further a role is from the weapon itself, like cybersecurity, logistics, protective equipment or search-and-rescue technology, the lighter the concern.

Personal conscience

This is an area where two sincere Muslims can reach different decisions. Ask yourself what your work actually produces, who the main customers are, and whether you could explain it to Allah with a clear heart. If you feel uneasy, that feeling is worth listening to, and there's often a way to use the same skills in civilian work. Talk it through with a knowledgeable scholar who understands your field.
