Yes, it is completely okay for Muslim men to cry. The Prophet ﷺ cried, the prophets before him cried, and the Quran praises men whose eyes fill with tears. Crying is part of a soft, living heart, not a sign of weakness.

The Prophet ﷺ cried openly

When his baby son Ibrahim was dying, the Prophet ﷺ had tears running down his face. A Companion was surprised, and he explained that this is mercy. He said: "The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord" (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303).

He also wept when listening to the Quran. He once asked Abdullah ibn Mas'ud to recite to him, and when Ibn Mas'ud reached a verse about the Day of Judgement, the Prophet's ﷺ eyes were overflowing with tears (Sahih al-Bukhari 5050). See Did the Prophet ever feel sad?

Prophets brought their grief to Allah

Prophet Yaqub (Jacob) wept so much over his son Yusuf that his eyesight was affected. He didn't hide his pain or pretend to be fine. He turned it toward Allah:

إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ "I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah." Quran 12:86

That is the Islamic model: feel it, cry if you need to, and take it to Allah.

Tears that Allah loves

Among the seven people Allah will shade on the Day of Judgement is a man who remembered Allah in private and his eyes flowed with tears (Sahih al-Bukhari 660). The Quran also describes believers who hear the revelation and their eyes overflow because they recognise the truth (Quran 5:83). Crying out of love, fear or longing for Allah is something to hope for, not be embarrassed by.

What about "real men don't cry"?

That idea comes from culture, not from Islam. Islamic manliness (muru'ah) is about honesty, keeping your word, protecting others and controlling your anger, not about hiding every feeling. What Islam does discourage at funerals is wailing, tearing clothes or saying words of objection against Allah's decree. Quiet tears and a sad heart are fine. • The Prophet ﷺ cried at his son's death and when hearing the Quran.
  • Crying is described as mercy in the heart.
  • Weeping in private worship is praised in hadith.
