Yes, wearing all black is fine for Muslim men. The Prophet ﷺ wore a black turban, and no text forbids black clothing. White is recommended but not required. Black only becomes a concern when it is worn to show off, to follow a symbol that conflicts with Islam, or as a long-term sign of mourning.

The Prophet ﷺ and black

Amr ibn Huraith reported that the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people on the day of the conquest of Makkah with a black turban on his head (Sahih Muslim 1359). Another narration describes the turban with its two ends hanging between his shoulders. He was also given a black cloak, which he put on Umm Khalid, then a small girl, and he praised its designs (Sahih al-Bukhari 5823). So black is part of the sunnah record, not something to feel uneasy about.

White is preferred, not required

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Wear the white among your garments, for indeed they are among the best of your garments" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 994). That makes white recommended, especially for Friday, but wearing other colors does not remove the reward of the sunnah or make you sinful. A black suit, black jeans and a black jumper are all permitted. See Is it sunnah for men to wear white?

When black becomes a problem

As a mourning sign: Islam has no mourning color. The Prophet ﷺ limited a woman's outward mourning for any relative to three days, except for her husband (Sahih al-Bukhari 1280), so wearing black for weeks or months as a sign of grief is not a sunnah. Dark clothes at a funeral are fine. See What should I wear to a Muslim funeral?

With certain symbols: the black color is not the issue, but black outfits covered in skulls, occult signs or offensive slogans are. See Can Muslim men wear clothes with crosses or skulls?

To show off or intimidate: any color worn to draw attention or look tough goes against humility.

Practical points

  • Heat: black absorbs heat, so in a hot summer a lighter color is more comfortable and may be easier to wear all day and at prayer.
  • Prayer: black clothes are fine to pray in if they are clean. Check that they are not marked with something impure, since dark fabric hides stains.
  • Fit still matters: black skinny jeans or tight leggings raise the same questions as any tight clothing.
  • Context: in some workplaces and cultures black is formal wear, which can be a good thing for a Muslim man.

Other colors raise their own small questions. See Are there colors Muslim men cannot wear?

Key points
  • Black is allowed; the Prophet ﷺ wore a black turban.
  • White is recommended, but other colors are fine.
  • Islam has no mourning color, and outward mourning is short.
  • Avoid skulls, occult symbols and showing off, whatever the color.
Tip: If you wear a lot of black, keep one crisp white shirt for Jumu'ah. It follows the sunnah and also gives your wardrobe some balance.
