Is it okay if some hair shows under my hijab?

It depends on whether it's on purpose. All four schools agree the hair is part of what hijab covers, so you shouldn't style a few locks to show. But a strand that slips out by accident while you're busy isn't a sin, and you simply tuck it back in when you notice.

The rule: cover the hair

Scholars of the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools all count a woman's hair as part of her awrah in front of non-mahram men. So deliberately showing a fringe, side bangs or a ponytail under the scarf isn't proper hijab, even if most of the head is covered. Accidents are forgiven

Hijabs slip. Wind blows, you bend down, a child pulls your scarf. Islam doesn't punish what you didn't choose. The Prophet ﷺ said that the religion is easy, and told believers to do their best and keep going (Sahih al-Bukhari 39). And the Quran says:

لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity." Quran 2:286

So if you notice hair showing, fix it calmly. There's no need to feel guilty about a slip you didn't choose.

What about baby hairs at the hairline?

Many women have short, fine hairs at the forehead that slip out no matter what. Many scholars treat these tiny strands leniently when you've made a real effort, because they're hard to avoid. An underscarf usually solves the problem. During prayer, try to keep the hairline covered; if a little shows by accident, the prayer is still valid according to many scholars, especially in the Hanafi school where a small amount is overlooked.

Practical ways to keep hair in

  • Wear an underscarf (bonnet or tube cap). Cotton and jersey grip best.
  • Choose non-slip fabrics like jersey or crinkle cotton over silk or satin.
  • Secure your hair first in a low bun or braid. See Is the hair bun under hijab haram?
  • Pin at the side rather than under the chin, so the scarf doesn't pull back.

Neck and ears raise similar questions; see Can my neck or ears show when I wear hijab?

Key points
  • Hair is covered in hijab by agreement of the four schools.
  • Showing it on purpose isn't proper hijab.
  • Accidental slips aren't a sin; just tuck the hair back.
  • An underscarf solves most problems.
Tip: Keep a spare underscarf and two pins in your bag. A quick mirror check in the bathroom before meetings or prayer saves you from worrying all day.
