Is it wrong to ask Allah to let me die?

Yes, the Prophet ﷺ told us not to wish for death because of hardship, but feeling this way doesn't make you a bad Muslim. He taught a gentler dua to say instead. What the Prophet ﷺ said
The Prophet ﷺ said: "None of you should wish for death because of a harm that has befallen him. If he must, let him say: O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5671). In Arabic: Allahumma ahyini ma kanatil-hayatu khayran li, wa tawaffani idha kanatil-wafatu khayran li.
Notice the mercy in this. He didn't scold people for feeling overwhelmed. He gave them words that hand the matter to Allah, who knows what is truly best.
Why life is worth staying for
Every extra day is a chance to grow, to be forgiven and to do good. Pain in this life is not wasted: the Prophet ﷺ taught that even the prick of a thorn wipes away sins for a believer. Hard seasons do pass, even when it doesn't feel like it.
These feelings are not a sin
Thoughts of death often come with depression, grief, burnout or trauma. Having them is not the same as acting on them, and Allah doesn't hold you to account for thoughts you didn't choose. Taking your own life, however, is forbidden in Islam, which is why getting help matters so much. See What does Islam say about suicidal thoughts?
What to do right now
- Tell someone today: a friend, family member, imam or your doctor.
- Call a crisis line if the thoughts are strong. You don't have to be in immediate danger to call.
- See a doctor or therapist. Treatment is fully compatible with faith. See Is going to therapy a lack of faith in Allah?
