Is joining an office March Madness pool haram?

Yes, if you pay in and the winner takes the pot. A bracket pool with a buy-in and a cash prize is gambling, even among friendly coworkers and even for a few dollars. But you can often join without paying, for the fun and bragging rights, or when the prize is funded by the boss or a sponsor.

Why a buy-in pool counts as gambling

Gambling (maysir) has three parts: you put money at risk, the result depends on chance or prediction, and one person's gain is another person's loss. A March Madness pool where everyone pays $5 and the best bracket wins the pot has all three. Knowing basketball well does not change that, since upsets decide most brackets.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَأْكُلُوٓا۟ أَمْوَٰلَكُم بَيْنَكُم بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ "O believers! Do not devour one another's wealth illegally" Quran 4:29

The Quran also names gambling next to intoxicants as "evil of Satan's handiwork" (Quran 5:90). The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever tells a friend, "Come, let me gamble with you," should give something in charity (Sahih al-Bukhari 6301). A small amount does not change the ruling. Ways to join without paying

  • Fill in a bracket for fun. Ask if you can take part without the buy-in. Many offices are happy to say yes.
  • Free pools. Free bracket contests run by sports sites or sponsors have no entry fee.
  • Prizes from the organiser. If the company buys the gift card or lunch and nobody pays to enter, no one loses money.
  • Charity only. If all the money goes to a charity and no player wins cash, it is a donation with a game attached. Ask your imam if you are unsure.

An entry fee that only pays for running an event is a different matter. See Is a tournament entry fee gambling?

How to say no kindly

Most coworkers will not mind. You can say:

  • "I'll fill in a bracket for fun, but I don't put money in. It's a faith thing."
  • "Count me out of the pot, but I'm happy to cheer along."
  • "Can we do it for bragging rights, or have the winner pick the lunch spot?"

Suggesting a no-money version is often welcomed, because it includes people who do not want to pay too, including some who simply dislike gambling.

If you already paid in

Do not worry about the past, but do not repeat it. If your bracket wins, ask an imam how to handle the prize. A common view is that you may take back your own stake, and give the winnings away in charity without expecting a reward. Next year, join the version with no buy-in. Key points
  • A pool with a buy-in and a cash prize is gambling.
  • The amount, and the friendly atmosphere, do not change the ruling.
  • You can take part for fun without paying in.
  • Suggest a free version, a sponsor-funded prize or a charity-only pot.
Tip: Speak to the organiser privately before the pool opens. A short, relaxed message works better than turning down the buy-in in front of the whole office.
