Is KFC halal?

It depends on the country and the branch. In the UK, a number of KFC restaurants are halal-certified, and KFC lists them on its website. In the USA and most of Europe, KFC chicken is generally not halal. In Muslim-majority countries, KFC is usually fully halal.
KFC in the UK
KFC UK runs a set of restaurants that serve halal-certified chicken, approved by a UK halal certification body. At those branches the chicken is halal; at the others it isn't. The chicken in UK halal branches is usually stunned before slaughter, which most UK certifiers accept as long as the bird is still alive when it is slaughtered. Some Muslims only eat unstunned meat, so they still avoid it. See How is halal meat slaughtered?
Lists and policies change, so check KFC's current halal restaurant list or look for the certificate on the wall before ordering.
KFC in the USA and Europe
In the USA, KFC chicken comes from regular suppliers and isn't halal-slaughtered, apart from a few individually owned franchises in Muslim neighborhoods. Most European countries are the same. Scholars generally say chicken must be properly slaughtered with Allah's name mentioned:
Some scholars accept meat from Christian or Jewish slaughter, but most hold that factory chicken in the West doesn't meet the conditions. See Is all chicken halal?
What about fries and sides?
At a non-halal KFC, fries, corn and drinks contain no meat, but they may share oil or kitchen space with chicken, and some countries add animal flavorings or use beef fat. Scholars differ on how much shared equipment matters. The Prophet ﷺ said that halal is clear and haram is clear, and between them are doubtful matters, and whoever avoids them protects his religion (Sahih al-Bukhari 52). Many Muslims simply eat elsewhere. The same reasoning is covered in Can I still eat at McDonald's as a Muslim?
Practical options
- UK: use KFC's halal restaurant list, or ask staff to show the certificate.
- USA/Europe: try local halal fried chicken shops, which are common in big cities.
- Abroad: in places like Malaysia, Turkey or the Gulf, KFC is normally halal.
For eating out more generally, see Can Muslims eat at non-halal restaurants?
- Some UK KFC branches are halal-certified; others aren't.
- US and most European KFC chicken isn't halal.
- UK halal KFC chicken is usually stunned; views on that differ.
- Sides may share fryers, so many Muslims avoid non-halal branches.
