Is littering a sin in Islam?

Yes, littering is a sin in Islam. It harms people, animals and the earth Allah trusted us with, and the Prophet ﷺ taught that removing harmful things from the road is part of faith. Dropping rubbish in public is the opposite of that.
Cleaning the road is part of faith
The Prophet ﷺ said that faith has over seventy branches, the highest is saying "There is no god but Allah" and the lowest is removing something harmful from the road (Sahih Muslim 35). He also told of a man who moved a thorny branch out of people's way, and Allah thanked him and forgave him (Sahih al-Bukhari 2472).
If removing harm earns forgiveness, putting harm there is clearly not neutral. A broken bottle on a pavement, a greasy wrapper in a park or a cigarette butt in a stream all hurt someone.
Spoiling public places
The Prophet ﷺ warned people to avoid two things that bring curses: relieving oneself on paths people use or in shade where they rest (Sahih Muslim 269). Scholars apply the same principle to anything that makes shared spaces dirty or unpleasant. The Quran also tells us not to spoil what Allah has set right:
How serious is it?
Scholars wouldn't place a dropped crisp packet among the major sins. But small sins add up, and littering also breaks local laws and harms others, which Islam takes seriously because it involves other people's rights. Muslims are expected to respect the lawful rules of the place they live. See Do I have to follow the laws of my country as a Muslim?
Cleanliness is a big part of Islam, from wudu to trimming nails. The Prophet ﷺ said purity is half of faith (Sahih Muslim 223). See What is fitrah hygiene in Islam?
Animals and nature
Plastic and fishing line kill birds, foxes and sea life. Islam teaches mercy to animals, and many Muslims see cleaning up as a form of charity for them too. See Can I donate to an animal shelter as a Muslim?
