Yes, most scholars and Muslims consider Marmite halal. It's made from yeast extract, a by-product of brewing, but the yeast is washed, broken down and heated into a new substance with no alcohol left in it. It contains no meat and is suitable for vegetarians. A minority of cautious Muslims still avoid it because of the brewery link.

What is Marmite made of?

Marmite, the famous British spread, is mainly yeast extract with salt, vegetable extract, spices and added B vitamins. The yeast is spent brewer's yeast left over from making beer. It is cleaned, the cells are broken down, and the liquid is concentrated into the dark, sticky paste people either love or hate. There are no animal ingredients.

Why the beer connection matters

Alcohol is clearly forbidden in Islam:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا ٱلْخَمْرُ وَٱلْمَيْسِرُ وَٱلْأَنصَابُ وَٱلْأَزْلَـٰمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ فَٱجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." Quran 5:90

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every intoxicant is khamr, and every intoxicant is forbidden" (Sahih Muslim 2003). So the question is whether Marmite is still connected to beer in any way that counts.

Why most scholars say it's fine

  • Yeast itself is halal. It's a living micro-organism, not an intoxicant, and Muslims bake with it every day.
  • Transformation (istihala): the yeast is processed into a completely different product. Marmite doesn't intoxicate in any amount.
  • No alcohol remains in a meaningful amount after washing and heating.

Some scholars, especially in the Shafi'i school, are stricter about substances that once came into contact with alcohol and recommend avoiding them if you can. Both views are held by sincere people, so choose calmly and don't judge others. For a similar case, see Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?

Key points
  • Marmite is yeast extract, with no meat or alcohol.
  • The yeast comes from brewing but is fully transformed.
  • Most scholars consider it halal.
  • Some cautious Muslims avoid it; respect both views.
Tip: If Marmite was part of your breakfast before Islam, you can usually keep enjoying it on toast. If your heart isn't settled, try a yeast extract with a halal logo instead.
