Is mayonnaise halal?

Yes, regular mayonnaise is halal in most cases. Classic mayo is just oil, egg yolk, vinegar or lemon juice, salt and a little sugar, all of which are permissible. The things to check are flavored versions (like bacon mayo), the type of vinegar, and any added animal ingredients.
What's in mayonnaise?
A standard jar of mayonnaise from the supermarket contains:
- Vegetable oil (rapeseed, sunflower or soybean)
- Egg yolk, which is halal; eggs don't need slaughter
- Vinegar (usually spirit vinegar) and/or lemon juice
- Salt, sugar, mustard and sometimes a natural flavoring
None of these is forbidden, so a plain mayo needs no halal logo to be fine. Allah invites us to enjoy what is good and lawful:
What about the vinegar?
Vinegar itself is halal. The Prophet ﷺ even praised it, saying, "What a good condiment vinegar is" (Sahih Muslim 2051). Most mayonnaise uses spirit vinegar, which has no wine in it at all. Some gourmet or French-style mayos use wine vinegar. The majority of scholars today treat commercial wine vinegar as halal because the wine has fully turned into vinegar, though a minority prefer to avoid it. Which mayonnaise to double-check
- Bacon or "smoky bacon" mayo: may contain real pork or pork flavoring. Read the label.
- Light or low-fat mayo: occasionally thickened with gelatin or contains additives like E471 that can be animal-based. See Are E-numbers halal?
- Flavored sauces (aioli, chipotle, "burger sauce"): sometimes contain wine, beer or animal stock.
- Vegan mayo: no eggs, no animal products, so it's usually the easiest choice when unsure.
Mayo in restaurants and sandwiches
The mayo is rarely the problem when you eat out. The real question is what it's served with: a chicken or beef burger that isn't halal, or a sandwich with ham. Ask about the meat and about shared knives and grills. See Can Muslims eat at non-halal restaurants?
If something is genuinely unclear, the Prophet ﷺ taught that halal is clear, haram is clear, and between them are doubtful things that it's better to stay away from (Sahih al-Bukhari 52). That doesn't mean worrying over every jar; it means checking when there's a real reason to.
- Plain mayonnaise (oil, egg, vinegar, lemon) is halal.
- Spirit vinegar is fine; most scholars accept wine vinegar too.
- Check bacon, light and specialty versions for animal or alcohol ingredients.
- When eating out, the meat matters more than the mayo.
