Is Mexican food halal?

It depends: Mexican food is not halal by default, but much of it can be. Beans, rice, corn, salsa, guacamole and vegetables are halal in themselves. The things to watch are pork dishes, lard, non-halal meat and alcohol in some sauces.
What makes Mexican food halal or not
Halal is about ingredients, not cuisine. Allah tells all people to eat what is lawful and wholesome:
Tortillas, black beans, pico de gallo, elote, rice and fresh salsa are all plant-based and usually fine. A Mexican dish becomes a problem only when one of its parts is haram.
Ingredients to watch for
- Pork dishes: carnitas, al pastor, chorizo (unless it says beef or chicken chorizo) and chicharrón are all pork.
- Lard (manteca): traditional refried beans, tamales and some flour tortillas are made with pork fat. Many restaurants now use vegetable oil, but ask.
- Meat: beef, chicken and birria at a regular taqueria are not halal-slaughtered. Most scholars say this meat isn't halal for you. See Can Muslims eat at non-halal restaurants?
- Alcohol: some sauces, marinades and "borracho" beans are cooked with beer or tequila.
- Cheese: queso fresco and cotija may use animal rennet. Scholars differ on this; most are relaxed about it. See Is cheese halal?
Eating out at Mexican restaurants
In big US and UK cities you'll find halal Mexican places and halal taco trucks, often run by Muslim owners. At a regular chain, a safe order is usually a bean, veggie or fish burrito or bowl, with rice, salsa, guacamole and sour cream. Ask whether the beans contain lard or bacon and whether the rice is cooked in chicken stock.
Cross-contact is the next question. If the same grill handles pork, you can ask them to use a clean spatula or change gloves. Most scholars say a small accidental trace you couldn't avoid doesn't make you sinful. See Is it haram to eat food that touched pork?
Cooking Mexican food at home
This is the easiest way to enjoy it fully. Use halal beef or chicken from a halal butcher, vegetable oil instead of lard, and lime juice or vinegar instead of beer in marinades. Halal beef chorizo and halal birria recipes are easy to find, and most of the flavor comes from chiles, cumin, garlic and lime anyway.
- Beans, rice, corn, salsa and veggies are halal in themselves.
- Avoid carnitas, al pastor, pork chorizo and anything with lard.
- Meat at regular restaurants usually isn't halal-slaughtered.
- Ask about lard in beans and alcohol in sauces.
