Partly. In the UK, many Nando's restaurants serve halal-certified chicken, but not all of them. Nando's shows which restaurants are halal on its website. The chicken is usually stunned before slaughter, and alcohol is still sold, so some Muslims are happy to eat there and others aren't.

How halal works at Nando's UK

Nando's UK has said that the chicken in its halal-certified restaurants is approved by a UK halal certification body. Restaurants without certification serve chicken that isn't halal. That's why you'll hear different things from different friends: it really depends on the branch. Policies can change, so check the current list for your restaurant before you go.

Stunning and other concerns

  • Stunning: halal chicken in the UK, including at Nando's, is usually stunned first. Many scholars and UK certifiers accept this if the bird is alive when slaughtered, while others only accept unstunned meat. See Is halal meat cruel?
  • Alcohol: Nando's serves beer and wine. Eating there is still allowed by most scholars, as long as you don't drink or sit at a table where people are drinking.
  • Other meat: check non-chicken items like burgers or any special dishes separately.

What makes meat halal?

Islam forbids certain meat outright and requires proper slaughter for the rest:

حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلْمَيْتَةُ وَٱلدَّمُ وَلَحْمُ ٱلْخِنزِيرِ وَمَآ أُهِلَّ لِغَيْرِ ٱللَّهِ بِهِۦ "Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah..." Quran 5:3

Chicken from a properly certified source meets these conditions. If you want to understand why not every chicken counts, see Is all chicken halal?

Nando's outside the UK

Nando's in South Africa, Malaysia, Australia, the USA and elsewhere each have their own supply chains and policies. Some are fully halal, some partly, some not at all. Don't assume the UK rules apply abroad; ask the restaurant or check the local website. For general advice on eating while abroad, see How do I find halal food while traveling?

If you're at a non-halal branch with friends, the vegetarian and fish options are an alternative, though some Muslims still avoid shared grills.

Key points
  • Many, but not all, UK Nando's serve halal-certified chicken.
  • The chicken is usually stunned; scholars differ on that.
  • Nando's sells alcohol, but you can eat there without drinking.
  • Outside the UK, check each country's policy separately.
Tip: Before a meal with friends, look up your local branch on the Nando's website. If it isn't halal, suggest a nearby certified branch; most people won't mind a short trip for peri-peri chicken.
