Yes, Nutella is considered halal by most Muslims and scholars. Its ingredients are sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skimmed milk powder, soy lecithin and vanillin. There's no pork, no gelatin and no added alcohol, so you can enjoy it on your toast.

What's actually in Nutella?

The classic recipe sold in Europe and the USA lists:

  • Sugar and palm oil
  • Hazelnuts and cocoa
  • Skimmed milk powder (and in some countries whey powder), which come from milk and are halal
  • Lecithin (from soy or sunflower), a plant-based emulsifier
  • Vanillin, a flavoring usually made synthetically

All of these are permissible. Islam starts from the position that good food is allowed unless there's a reason to forbid it, and the Prophet ﷺ was described as one who:

وَيُحِلُّ لَهُمُ ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ وَيُحَرِّمُ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْخَبَـٰٓئِثَ "...makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil..." Quran 7:157

Is it halal-certified?

In several Muslim-majority countries, Nutella made in local factories carries a halal certificate. In the UK, Europe and the USA, the jar usually has no halal logo. That's normal for products with no meat or alcohol: a missing logo doesn't make something haram. Scholars generally accept products like this based on their ingredients.

What about Nutella snacks and spin-offs?

The spread is simple, but other products with the Nutella name can have different recipes:

  • Nutella B-ready, biscuits and muffins: check the label for E471 (mono- and diglycerides), which can be plant or animal based. See Are E-numbers halal?
  • Desserts in cafés (crêpes, waffles, cheesecakes) may add gelatin, liqueur or rum. Ask before you order.
  • Hazelnut spreads from other brands are usually similar, but read the ingredients too.

The same goes for other chocolate treats; most are fine, but fillings can surprise you. See Can I eat the chocolate from an Advent calendar? and Can I still eat gummy bears as a Muslim?

A balanced approach

New Muslims sometimes feel they have to research every jar in the kitchen. You don't. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2518), but that applies to real doubts, not to every product without a logo. For Nutella, the ingredients are clear.

Key points
  • Nutella's ingredients contain no pork, gelatin or alcohol.
  • Milk powder, whey and soy lecithin are halal.
  • No halal logo in the West doesn't make it haram.
  • Check spin-off snacks and café desserts separately.
Tip: Recipes can change between countries. If you buy Nutella abroad or in a new size, take ten seconds to read the ingredient list. If it still looks like the list above, enjoy it.
