Is palm reading haram?

Yes, palm reading is haram in Islam when it is used to tell your future, your character or your luck. Only Allah knows the unseen, and visiting fortune tellers is clearly forbidden. Looking at your hands for medical reasons, or reading about the history of palmistry, is a different matter.
Why palm reading is not allowed
Palm reading (palmistry or chiromancy) claims that the lines on your hand reveal how long you will live, who you will marry, whether you will be rich and what your "true" personality is. In Islam, that kind of knowledge of the future belongs to Allah alone. A palm reader is a type of fortune teller, and Islam treats fortune telling as a serious matter, not a harmless party trick.
What the Prophet ﷺ said about fortune tellers
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever goes to a fortune teller and asks him about something, his prayer is not accepted for forty nights (Sahih Muslim 2230). That is just for asking. Believing what the fortune teller says is even worse: whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes him has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ (Sunan Abi Dawud 3904).
Scholars explain that "not accepted" means you lose the reward of those prayers, not that you skip them. You still pray as normal, and you make sincere repentance.
What about doing it "just for fun"?
Many converts grew up with palm reading at fairs, festivals or sleepovers. It may feel like a game, but the hadith above covers simply asking, even out of curiosity. So it's best to:
- Politely decline to have your palm read, or to read someone else's.
- Avoid apps and websites that "scan" your palm to predict your future.
- Skip tarot, crystal balls, tea-leaf reading and similar tools for the same reason. See Can I still read my horoscope after becoming Muslim?
Learning about palmistry for a history or anthropology class, or a doctor checking your palms for health signs, is not fortune telling and is fine.
If you did it before (or recently)
If you had your palm read before becoming Muslim, your shahada wiped the slate clean. If it happened after, simply say astaghfirullah, regret it and move on. Allah forgives those who turn back to Him. See Are all my sins forgiven when I become Muslim?
When you're anxious about the future, Islam gives you better tools: make dua, pray istikhara before big decisions, and put your trust in Allah. See Does tawakkul mean I shouldn't worry?
- Palm reading to predict the future or your fate is haram.
- Only Allah knows the unseen, including your lifespan and your luck.
- Asking a fortune teller costs the reward of forty nights of prayer; believing them is far more serious.
- Past mistakes are forgiven with sincere repentance.
