Riding an animal isn't haram in itself, but most tourist elephant rides involve cruelty, so it's better to avoid them. Islam allows riding animals that are treated well. Elephants used for tourist rides are often beaten into obedience and carry loads that hurt them, which goes against the mercy Islam requires.

Riding animals is allowed

The Prophet ﷺ rode camels, horses and donkeys, and the Quran mentions riding animals as one of Allah's gifts. So there's no rule that says "never ride an elephant". The question is how the animal is treated. See Is horse riding sunnah?

Animals have rights

Islam takes animal welfare seriously. Allah reminds us that animals are communities like us:

وَمَا مِن دَآبَّةٍ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا طَـٰٓئِرٍ يَطِيرُ بِجَنَاحَيْهِ إِلَّآ أُمَمٌ أَمْثَالُكُم "And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you." Quran 6:38

The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has prescribed excellence in everything (Sahih Muslim 1955), and he told of a woman who entered the Fire because of a cat she locked up without food (Sahih al-Bukhari 3482). Cruelty to an animal is a real sin.

The problem with tourist elephant rides

Animal welfare groups have documented common practices in the riding trade:

  • Young elephants are often separated from their mothers and "broken" with pain to make them obey.
  • Bull hooks and chains are used to control them during rides.
  • Heavy seats on their backs can damage their spines over time.
  • Many are kept alone, which is hard on such social animals.

Paying for a ride supports this business. Since Islam forbids causing animals needless suffering and also forbids helping others in wrongdoing, many scholars and Muslim travellers choose to skip these rides. Making animals suffer for entertainment is the same concern behind Are animal fighting sports haram?

Better ways to enjoy elephants

  • Visit a genuine sanctuary that doesn't allow riding or shows.
  • Watch elephants in the wild on a responsible safari.
  • Help with feeding or bathing only where the animals clearly aren't stressed.
  • Read reviews from welfare organisations before booking.
Key points
  • Riding animals is permissible in Islam.
  • Cruelty to animals is a serious sin.
  • Most tourist elephant rides rely on harsh treatment.
  • Choose ethical sanctuaries or wild sightings instead.
Tip: Ask any elephant camp two questions before you book: "Do you offer rides?" and "Do you use hooks or chains?" A yes to either means find another place. And remember, animals will have their own justice on the Day of Judgement. See Will animals be judged on the Day of Judgement?
