Is Roblox haram?

No, Roblox isn't haram in itself. It's a platform full of games other people make, so whether it's okay depends on which games your child plays, who they talk to, and how money is spent. With parental controls, time limits and open conversation, many Muslim families let their kids play.

Why Roblox is different from one game

Roblox isn't a single game. It's millions of user-made "experiences," from obstacle courses and pet simulators to horror games and role-play worlds. Some are wholesome and creative; others include violence, romance role-play or content you wouldn't want at home. So the question isn't really "Is Roblox haram?" but "What is my child doing on it?" The general rule for games is that they're allowed unless something in them is wrong. See Can I still play video games as a Muslim?

The three things to watch

  • Content: some experiences include dating role-play, gore, foul language or idol-like rituals. Use the content maturity settings and look at what your child actually plays.
  • Chat with strangers: this is the biggest risk. Adults can pose as kids, and private chat moves fast. For younger children, turning chat off or limiting it to friends you know is wise.
  • Money: Robux are bought with real money, and some games sell random-reward items. The Prophet ﷺ forbade transactions involving uncertainty (Sahih Muslim 1513), and paying for a random prize comes close to gambling. See Can I still buy lottery tickets as a Muslim?

Parents are guardians

Islam gives parents real responsibility here. The Prophet ﷺ said, "All of you are guardians and responsible for your wards," and that a man "is the guardian of his family and is responsible for them" (Sahih al-Bukhari 893). The Quran puts it even more strongly:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire..." Quran 66:6

Protecting doesn't mean banning everything. It means knowing what's going on, setting limits, and staying close enough that your child tells you when something feels wrong.

Practical setup

  • Set up a parent account and link it to your child's, then set the age and content settings.
  • Turn off or restrict chat, and block in-game purchases or set a spending limit.
  • Keep gaming in shared rooms, not behind a closed bedroom door.
  • Make prayer times natural pauses: the game stops when the adhan app goes off.
  • Play together sometimes. You'll learn more in ten minutes than from any review.

Also be careful about what your child shares: no real names, school, photos or location. See Can I post photos of my kids on social media as a Muslim?

Key points
  • Roblox is allowed in principle; individual games may not be.
  • Chat with strangers is the main safety risk.
  • Avoid paying for random-reward items.
  • Parental controls and time limits are part of good guardianship.
Tip: Ask your child to give you a "tour" of their favorite Roblox game. Kids love showing it off, and it opens an easy, non-judgmental conversation about what's okay.
