Is self-harm a sin in Islam?

It depends, and mercy comes first. Islam teaches that your body is a trust and you shouldn't harm it, so scholars say deliberately hurting yourself is not allowed. But self-harm is usually a way of coping with unbearable pain, not rebellion against Allah. If you're struggling, you are not beyond His mercy. What you need most right now is care and support, not shame.

Why Islam asks you to protect yourself

Allah tells believers not to bring harm on themselves:

وَلَا تُلْقُوا۟ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى ٱلتَّهْلُكَةِ "And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction." Quran 2:195

The Prophet ﷺ also said: "Your body has a right over you" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5199). These teachings come from Allah's care for you. He doesn't want you to suffer. The rule isn't there to condemn you, but to protect you.

Struggling doesn't make you a bad Muslim

Scholars also stress that a person's state matters. Someone overwhelmed by distress or mental illness isn't judged like someone acting with a calm, clear mind, and Allah knows exactly what you're carrying. He says: "do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins" (Quran 39:53).

If you've hurt yourself before, you don't need to hide in shame. Make a simple tawbah, ask Allah for help, and focus on healing. If it happens again, turn back again. See Will Allah forgive me if I keep committing the same sin?

Getting help

Self-harm is a sign that something hurts deeply, often depression, trauma, anxiety or overwhelming emotions. These can be treated.

  • Talk to a doctor or therapist: approaches like DBT are designed to help with self-harm urges.
  • Tell one trusted person: a friend, family member, school counselor or imam.
  • Have a plan for urges: hold ice, take a cold shower, go for a fast walk, or call someone until the urge passes.
  • Turn to Allah in your own words: even "Ya Allah, I'm hurting" is a dua. See What dua can I say when I feel anxious?

Depression often sits underneath self-harm. See Is depression a sign of weak faith in Islam?

Key points
  • Islam asks you to protect your body, because Allah cares for you.
  • Self-harm is usually a response to pain, not defiance.
  • Allah's mercy is open to you, every time you turn back.
  • Get support from a doctor, therapist or trusted person.
Tip: Write a short list of "urge alternatives" and two phone numbers on a card you keep with you. When the urge comes, you won't have to think, just follow the card.
