Is sleep paralysis caused by jinn?

Not necessarily: sleep paralysis has a well-understood medical explanation, and Islam doesn't require you to blame jinn for it. Some Muslims link frightening episodes to Shaytan, and scholars agree that bad dreams can come from him. The balanced approach is to see a doctor if it happens often and to use the Prophet's ﷺ bedtime protection every night.

What sleep paralysis is

Sleep paralysis happens when your mind wakes up while your body is still in the "switched off" state of REM sleep. You can't move for a few seconds or minutes, and you may feel pressure on your chest or sense a presence in the room. It's common, especially with stress, irregular sleep, shift work, jet lag or sleeping on your back. Doctors consider it harmless in itself, though it can be very scary.

Where jinn come into the conversation

In many Muslim cultures, sleep paralysis has a folk name and is blamed on a jinn sitting on the sleeper. The Quran and authentic hadith don't mention sleep paralysis specifically. What they do teach is that Shaytan can disturb people's sleep through bad dreams: the Prophet ﷺ said a good dream is from Allah and a bad dream is from Shaytan, and that if you see something you dislike you should seek refuge in Allah and it won't harm you (Sahih al-Bukhari 3292).

So scholars hold two things together: a frightening night may have a spiritual side, and it very often has a physical cause. Believing in jinn doesn't mean every unusual experience is a jinn. See Can jinn or black magic cause mental illness?

Protection before you sleep

The Prophet ﷺ gave simple, powerful habits for the night:

  • Ayat al-Kursi: whoever recites it at bedtime has a guardian from Allah until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311). See What is Ayat al-Kursi and when do I recite it?
  • The last two verses of al-Baqarah: they are enough for whoever recites them at night (Sahih al-Bukhari 5009).
  • The three Quls blown into your hands and wiped over your body.
  • Sleeping in wudu, on your right side, with the bedtime dua. See What should I say before sleeping?

The Quran also teaches this short prayer for refuge:

وَقُل رَّبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَمَزَٰتِ ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ رَبِّ أَن يَحْضُرُونِ "And say, 'My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils, and I seek refuge in You, my Lord, lest they be present with me.'" Quran 23:97–98

When to see a doctor

If episodes happen often, come with extreme daytime sleepiness, or leave you afraid to sleep, talk to your GP or doctor and follow their advice. Sleep paralysis can be linked to narcolepsy, sleep apnoea, anxiety or poor sleep routines, all of which are treatable. Getting medical help is fully in line with Islam, and ruqyah can be done alongside it, never instead of it.

Key points
  • Sleep paralysis has a known medical cause and is usually harmless.
  • Bad dreams can come from Shaytan (Sahih al-Bukhari 3292).
  • Use bedtime adhkar like Ayat al-Kursi for protection.
  • See a doctor if it's frequent or affects your daily life.
Tip: During an episode, stay calm, focus on moving one finger or toe, and say "A'udhu billah" in your heart. It passes within moments, and a regular sleep schedule makes it much less likely.
