Is smudging with sage haram?

It depends on the intention. Burning sage or palo santo just for a pleasant smell is generally not an issue, like using incense. But smudging to drive out spirits, bad energy or to bring luck is a spiritual practice that Islam does not teach, and most scholars advise against it because it puts trust in something other than Allah.
The smoke is not the issue; the belief is
Islam does not forbid pleasant scents. Muslims use bakhoor and incense to freshen their homes. The question is why you are burning it:
- For fragrance: allowed, as long as the herb itself is not harmful or intoxicating.
- For cleansing "negative energy" or chasing spirits: not allowed, because it claims that a plant or smoke has spiritual power that Allah has not given to it.
Why scholars avoid spiritual rituals like this
The Prophet ﷺ warned against spells and charms that are used as spiritual protection or cure, calling them a form of shirk (associating partners with Allah), and he pointed instead to the supplications he taught (Sunan Abi Dawud 3883). The principle is simple: protection comes from Allah, through the means He has taught us, not from rituals borrowed from other traditions.
Smudging is rooted in Native American and other spiritual traditions where the smoke is believed to cleanse spirits. That makes it a religious practice from another belief system, not a neutral habit. Sincere people sometimes do it without thinking, and the remedy is simply to stop and replace it.
What to do instead
If a house feels heavy or uneasy, the sunnah gives clear means of protection:
- Recite Ayat al-Kursi. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that whoever recites it at bedtime will have a guard from Allah and Satan will not come near until morning (Sahih al-Bukhari 2311).
- Recite Surah al-Baqarah at home. The Prophet ﷺ said Satan runs away from a house where it is recited (Sahih Muslim 780).
- Say Bismillah on entering, and pray at home.
- Open the windows, clean the house and let in fresh air and light. That is practical comfort, and it has nothing to do with spirits.

If you used to smudge
If you did this before becoming Muslim, or even after, without knowing, there is no blame for what you did not know. Just stop and ask Allah for forgiveness. For similar questions, see Are healing crystals haram?
- Sage as a fragrance is fine; sage as a spiritual cleanse is not.
- Protection comes from Allah, through dua and recitation.
- Use Ayat al-Kursi, Surah al-Baqarah and Bismillah.
- No blame for what you did not know; just stop.
