Is sports betting haram?

Yes. Betting money on the result of a match, race or fight is gambling, which the Quran forbids clearly. That includes betting apps, accumulators, in-play bets, office sweepstakes with a cash pot and "free bet" offers designed to pull you in. Enjoying the sport is fine; putting money on it isn't.
What the Quran says
The word for gambling here, maysir, covers any deal where people stake money and the winner takes it from the loser by chance or prediction. Calling it "skill" doesn't change it: knowing a lot about football still doesn't make a bet anything other than a gamble.
What counts as betting
- Bookmaker bets on results, scorers or odds, online or in a shop.
- Sweepstakes and pools where everyone pays in and one person takes the pot.
- Paid prediction or fantasy leagues where the prize comes from entry fees.
- Friendly bets like "loser pays £20," even between friends.
What about prizes?
Not every prize is gambling. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Wagers are allowed only for racing camels, or horses or shooting arrows" (Sunan Abi Dawud 2574). Scholars explain that the prize in those races was usually put up by one side or by a third party, not taken from everyone's stakes. So a free-to-enter prediction game with a prize paid by a sponsor is generally fine. The line is crossed when your own money is at risk to win other people's money. The same reasoning applies to the lottery. See Can I still buy lottery tickets as a Muslim?
Playing games for fun with no money at stake is a different matter. See Can I still play poker with friends as a Muslim if we don't bet money?
If you're struggling to stop
Betting apps are built to be addictive, and many converts used them for years before Islam. Delete the apps, use self-exclusion tools (GAMSTOP in the UK, state self-exclusion lists in the US), and block gambling payments in your banking app. Free, confidential help lines exist in both countries, such as GamCare in the UK and the National Council on Problem Gambling in the US. If you slip, repent and try again; Allah's door doesn't close. See Will Allah forgive me if I keep committing the same sin?
- Sports betting is gambling, which the Quran forbids.
- Sweepstakes and paid prediction pots count too.
- Free-entry contests with a sponsor's prize are generally allowed.
- Use self-exclusion and support services if betting has a hold on you.
