It depends: Starbucks is not halal-certified in the USA, UK or most of Europe, but most of its drinks are halal by ingredients. Plain coffee, tea, lattes and most syrups are fine. The food is where you need to check, because some items contain pork, non-halal meat or gelatin.

Is Starbucks halal-certified?

In Muslim-majority countries such as Malaysia and the Gulf states, Starbucks outlets are halal-certified and their food is sourced to match. In the USA, UK and Europe there is no halal certification, so you judge each item by what's in it. Halal food and drink is part of eating "good things," as Allah says:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَـٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَـٰكُمْ وَٱشْكُرُوا۟ لِلَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ إِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُونَ "O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship." Quran 2:172

Drinks: mostly fine

  • Coffee, espresso, tea, matcha and lattes are halal. Milk and plant milks are fine.
  • Syrups like vanilla or caramel may use flavorings carried in a tiny amount of alcohol. Most scholars and halal bodies allow this, since it doesn't intoxicate and isn't from wine. See Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?
  • Toppings and inclusions (some whipped toppings, chips or crumbles) can contain gelatin or additives of uncertain source. Check the allergen and ingredient list in the app.

Food: check every item

  • Pork: bacon, ham and sausage sandwiches and wraps are out.
  • Chicken, turkey and beef: not halal-slaughtered at Starbucks in the West, so most scholars say to avoid them.
  • Gelatin: some cakes, marshmallow treats and gummies use pork or non-halal gelatin. See Can I still eat gummy bears as a Muslim?
  • Usually fine: plain croissants, many muffins, oatmeal, fruit cups and vegetarian items, as long as the ingredients look clean.

Some ingredient lists include E-numbers you won't recognize. Most are plant-based or synthetic. See Are E-numbers halal?

When you're unsure

The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2518). If you can't find the ingredients for a pastry, simply pick something you're sure about. Your coffee order is almost never the problem.

Some Muslims also choose where to buy coffee for ethical or political reasons. That's a personal choice and a separate question from whether the food is halal.

Key points
  • Starbucks in the West is not halal-certified.
  • Coffee, tea and most drinks are halal by ingredients.
  • Avoid pork, non-halal meat and items with gelatin.
  • If unsure, choose an item you know is clean.
Tip: Use the Starbucks app's "full nutrition and ingredients" section before you order. It lists gelatin and meat clearly, so you can check a new item in under a minute.
