It can be, if you mean it. "Ameen" means "O Allah, answer this", so typing it under a sincere dua is a small way of joining that dua. But Allah hears your heart, not the comment count, and posts saying "Type Ameen or you'll have bad luck" are superstition, not Islam.

What "Ameen" means

Ameen is a short dua on its own: "O Allah, accept" or "answer". Muslims say it after the imam finishes al-Fatiha, and the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever's Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels has his past sins forgiven (Sahih al-Bukhari 780). So it's a meaningful word, not filler. See Do I have to say "Ameen" after every dua?

Does it count when you type it?

A dua is calling on Allah, and Allah knows what is in your heart whether you speak, whisper or just think it. Most scholars say a dua should ideally move your tongue, even quietly, but a sincere request in your heart is still heard. See Can I make dua silently in my head? When you read "May Allah heal my mother" and type "Ameen" while actually asking Allah for her healing, you are making dua. If you type it on autopilot while scrolling, it's just a word on a screen.

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ "And your Lord says, 'Call upon Me; I will respond to you.'" Quran 40:60

Praying for strangers has real reward

The Prophet ﷺ said that a Muslim's dua for a brother or sister in their absence is answered, and an angel says, "Ameen, and for you the same" (Sahih Muslim 2733). Someone asking for dua online is absent from you, so a sincere Ameen, or better, a short dua in your own words, can bring the same good back to you. See Can I make dua for someone without telling them?

Watch out for chain posts

  • "Type Ameen in 5 seconds and you'll get good news" has no basis in Islam.
  • "Scroll past without Ameen and Allah will punish you" is false and spreads fear.
  • Many of these posts are engagement bait to grow a page.
  • You don't need a comment section to make dua; you can ask Allah directly, anytime.
Key points
  • Ameen means "O Allah, answer", so it is a dua.
  • It counts when your heart actually asks Allah.
  • Dua for others in their absence comes back to you.
  • "Type Ameen or else" posts are superstition.
Tip: When you see a dua request, pause for three seconds and say the dua quietly before typing Ameen. It turns a reflex into real worship.
