Is wearing a taweez or amulet haram?

It depends on what the amulet is, but the safest answer is to avoid it. Wearing a charm, bead or pouch for protection is not allowed, because the Prophet ﷺ warned that charms are shirk. Scholars differ about a taweez that contains only Quran or authentic duas: some allow it under strict conditions, and many advise against it.
What is a taweez?
A taweez (also spelled ta'wiz) is a small piece of paper, pouch, bead or metal charm that is worn or hung to ward off harm, illness or the evil eye. In Arabic the general word for an amulet is tamimah. Some contain Quran verses, others contain names, numbers or symbols. They are common in many Muslim cultures, and "lucky" pendants play a similar role in the West.
What the Prophet ﷺ said
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "spells, charms and love-potions are polytheism" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3883). Scholars explain that the "spells" here are ones involving shirk or unknown words, because the Prophet ﷺ allowed ruqyah that contains no shirk (Sahih Muslim 2200). The Prophet ﷺ also said, "Whoever hangs something, he is entrusted to it" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2072), meaning that person is left relying on the object instead of Allah. The Quran explains why:
What if it contains Quran?
This is where scholars differ. Some early and later scholars allowed a written amulet of Quran verses or authentic duas, as long as it is in clear Arabic and the owner believes only Allah protects. Others, including many scholars today, forbid even these. Their reasons are to close the door to shirk, because such objects soon become lucky charms, and because the Quran is meant to be recited and lived, not just carried.
Everyone agrees that it is not allowed if it has symbols, unknown letters, numbers, names of jinn or a belief that the object itself protects. See Can I wear jewelry with Quran verses on it?
What to do instead
- Recite the morning and evening adhkar, Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs.
- Use ruqyah with the Quran and authentic duas. See What is ruqyah and can I do it myself?
- Say the Prophet's dua for illness: "Remove the harm, O Lord of men, and heal. You are the Healer" (Sunan Abi Dawud 3883).
- See a doctor for health problems.
If someone gave you a taweez, thank them kindly and stop wearing it. If it contains Quran or Allah's names, ask your local imam how to dispose of it respectfully. Many scholars say to bury it or dissolve the ink in clean water. See Can I wear an evil eye bracelet as a Muslim?
