No, wearing a tie is not haram according to most contemporary scholars. A tie is ordinary business and formal wear worn by people of every faith, not a religious symbol. A small number of scholars disliked it in the past, but the common view today is that it's simply clothing.

Is a tie a Christian symbol?

You may hear that the tie represents a cross. Historians trace the modern tie to the cravat, a neck scarf worn by Croatian soldiers in the 17th century that became fashionable in France. It had a practical and fashion purpose, not a religious one. No church uses the tie as a sign of faith, and nobody sees a man in a tie and assumes he is Christian. That's very different from wearing an actual cross. See Can Muslims wear a cross?

What about imitating non-Muslims?

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4031). Scholars explain that this is about things that are distinctive of another religion or of sinful behaviour, like religious dress or rituals. Clothing that has spread worldwide and is worn by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, like suits, jeans and ties, is no longer a mark of any group. That's why Muslim imams, judges and politicians wear ties in many countries.

Some scholars, especially in earlier decades, said the tie was best avoided because it came from the West, and some Muslims personally prefer an open collar or traditional dress. That's a valid choice, but it isn't an obligation. Islam welcomes different cultures:

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ وَأُنثَىٰ وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَآئِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوٓا۟ "O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another..." Quran 49:13

Things to check on the tie itself

  • Pure silk: silk is forbidden for men, so choose a polyester, cotton, wool or blend tie instead of 100% silk. Many scholars allow a fabric that is mostly non-silk.
  • Gold: a gold tie clip or tie pin is not allowed for men, just like a gold ring. See Can Muslim men wear gold rings?
  • Designs: avoid ties printed with crosses, alcohol logos or other haram images.

Ties at work, school and ceremonies

If your job, school uniform or a wedding dress code requires a tie, you can wear it without guilt. The same easy approach applies to formal academic dress. See Can I wear a graduation gown and cap as a Muslim? Just loosen it or take it off for wudu if it gets in the way of washing your neck area, and make sure it doesn't hang in the water.

Key points
  • A tie is ordinary clothing, not a religious symbol.
  • Most scholars today say ties are allowed.
  • Choose non-silk fabric and avoid gold tie clips.
  • Wearing one for work or school is fine.
Tip: Check the label before buying a tie. "100% silk" is common in shops, but wool, cotton and microfibre ties look just as sharp and keep you clear of the silk issue.
