Yes, and sometimes it is a duty. When wrongdoing harms people, such as fraud, abuse, corruption or safety dangers, Islam encourages you to speak up truthfully instead of helping it continue. It must be done honestly, through the right channels, with evidence and without slander or revenge.

Do not help wrongdoing continue

Staying silent about serious harm can make you part of it. The Quran says:

وَتَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْبِرِّ وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَلَا تَعَاوَنُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ "Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression." Quran 5:2

The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Religion is sincerity," meaning sincere advice for Allah, His Book, His Messenger and for the leaders and the people (Sahih Muslim 55). He also said that whoever sees something abominable should change it by hand, or if unable, by tongue, or if unable, with the heart (Sahih Muslim 49). Reporting a problem to the right person is a way of using the tongue lawfully. See Can I report a crime by another Muslim to the police?

Covering faults versus exposing harm

Islam values privacy. The Prophet ﷺ said, "whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2442). This applies to private mistakes that hurt nobody. It does not mean hiding fraud, abuse or dangers that threaten others, because concealing those allows more people to be harmed. See Does Islam protect the right to privacy?

How to do it the right way

  • Check the facts. The Quran says to verify news so that you do not harm people through ignorance (Quran 49:6). Make sure you understand what happened.
  • Keep records. Save dates, documents and emails that you are legally allowed to keep.
  • Start internally if it is safe. A manager, compliance team or HR may fix the problem quickly.
  • Go to the proper authority. If nothing happens or it is unsafe, use the regulator, an inspector or the police, not social media.
  • Avoid gossip. Tell only those who need to know.
  • Check your motive. The goal is to stop harm, not to take revenge.

Many countries have laws that protect people who report wrongdoing at work, but they differ and have conditions, so take advice before you act. See Is it haram to expose someone's sins online?

Is it always required?

Scholars consider the size of the harm and your ability. Allah "does not require of any soul more than what it can afford" (Quran 2:286), so Islam does not ask you to put your safety or family at serious risk. If you cannot report openly, look for safer routes, such as an anonymous hotline or an independent adviser. Reporting serious harm for the right reasons is something Allah will see and value.

Key points
  • Islam encourages speaking up about serious harm (Quran 5:2; Sahih Muslim 49).
  • Covering private faults is different from hiding fraud or abuse.
  • Verify facts, use proper channels and avoid slander (Quran 49:6).
  • You are not required to take unbearable risks (Quran 2:286).
Tip: Before reporting, read your employer's whistleblowing policy and speak to an independent legal adviser. They can explain your protections and the safest first step.
