Is Worcestershire sauce halal?

Yes, Worcestershire sauce is generally halal. Its main ingredients are vinegar, anchovies, tamarind, molasses, onion, garlic and spices, which are all permissible. Just check the label for added wine or alcohol in some brands.
What's in it
The classic recipe, made famous by Lea & Perrins, contains:
- Malt vinegar and spirit vinegar
- Anchovies (a small fish)
- Tamarind, molasses and sugar
- Onions, garlic, salt, cloves and other spices
Nothing in that list comes from pork or a non-halal land animal. Recipes differ by country and brand, so it's still worth reading the label on the bottle you buy.
The anchovies are fine
Fish is halal by agreement of all schools, and it doesn't need slaughter:
Some vegetarian or vegan versions leave the anchovies out altogether, which is also fine. For more on sea food, see Can I eat shrimp and other seafood?
What about the vinegar?
Malt vinegar is made by fermenting barley into a kind of beer and then letting it turn into vinegar. Once it has become vinegar, it is no longer an intoxicant, and the majority of scholars say it is halal. The Prophet ﷺ said: "What an excellent condiment vinegar is" (Sahih Muslim 2051). Some scholars dislike vinegar that was deliberately made from wine, but malt and spirit vinegar don't raise that concern.
The same thinking covers other flavorings with tiny traces of alcohol from processing. See Is vanilla extract haram because it has alcohol?
When to be careful
- Added wine or sherry: some brands or "gourmet" versions add it. Avoid those. Cooking doesn't make it halal; see Can I cook with wine as a Muslim if the alcohol burns off?
- "Natural flavorings": usually plant-based, but if unsure, contact the maker or choose a halal-certified brand.
- Restaurant dishes: the sauce itself may be fine while the burger, marinade or cocktail it's in (like a Bloody Mary) isn't.
- Standard Worcestershire sauce is halal for most scholars.
- Anchovies are fish, which is always halal.
- Malt and spirit vinegar are permissible.
- Avoid versions with added wine or sherry.
