Yes, on Eid al-Fitr you should eat something before the prayer, ideally a few dates. On Eid al-Adha it's the opposite: the sunnah is to wait and eat after the prayer. Both are recommended, not obligatory, so if you get it wrong your Eid and your prayer are still fine.

Eid al-Fitr: eat first

Anas said the Prophet ﷺ never went out for the prayer on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, and that he used to eat an odd number (Sahih al-Bukhari 953). So one, three or five dates before you leave is the classic way.

Scholars mention a simple wisdom: after a month of fasting, eating in the morning shows you've ended the fast as Allah commands. Fasting on the day of Eid itself is forbidden (Sahih al-Bukhari 1990), so breakfast is part of the celebration.

  • No dates? Eat anything halal: a piece of fruit, toast, a sip of juice. The point is breaking the fast.
  • Running late? Grab a couple of dates for the car or the walk.

Eid al-Adha: wait until after the prayer

The Prophet ﷺ would not leave on the day of Fitr until he ate, "and he would not eat on the day of Adha until he prayed" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 542). Many scholars explain that he liked his first food that day to be from the sacrifice.

  • It isn't a fast: you're simply delaying breakfast for an hour or two. You can drink water.
  • No qurbani of your own? Some scholars say waiting is mainly for those who sacrifice; others apply it to everyone. Either way, it's a light matter.
  • Health needs come first: if you're diabetic, pregnant or need medication with food, eat. Islam doesn't ask you to harm yourself for a recommended act.
وَكُلُوا۟ وَٱشْرَبُوا۟ وَلَا تُسْرِفُوٓا۟ "and eat and drink, but be not excessive." Quran 7:31

Kids, guests and non-Muslim family

If you have children, an Eid breakfast of dates and something sweet is an easy tradition to start. If non-Muslim family are joining you, tell them the plan: "We eat a little before prayer, then have the big meal after." It helps them understand why the morning looks the way it does. What if I forgot?

If you forgot to eat before the Eid al-Fitr prayer, or ate before the Eid al-Adha prayer, nothing is broken. You simply missed a small sunnah. Eat when you remember and enjoy the rest of the day. And if you're wondering about the obligatory charity of the morning, see What is zakat al-fitr?

Key points
  • Eid al-Fitr: eat before the prayer, ideally an odd number of dates.
  • Eid al-Adha: wait and eat after the prayer.
  • Both are sunnah, not obligatory.
  • Health needs always come before a recommended act.
Tip: Put a small box of dates by your shoes or in your car on the night before Eid al-Fitr. Then you can't forget, and you'll have extra to share with others at the prayer.
