Should I give charity secretly or openly?

Both are good, but secret charity is generally better. The Quran says giving openly is fine, while giving secretly to the poor is better for you. Giving openly can be the right choice when it encourages others, like at a fundraiser, as long as your intention stays sincere and you don't embarrass the person receiving it.
What the Quran says
Elsewhere, Allah praises those who spend "by night and by day, secretly and publicly" (Quran 2:274). So both are rewarded, and secrecy has an extra benefit: it protects your sincerity and the dignity of the person you help. See Can I donate my old clothes as charity?
So secret the left hand doesn't know
Among the seven people Allah will shade on the Day of Judgment, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentioned someone who gives charity so secretly that his left hand doesn't know what his right hand has given (Sahih al-Bukhari 1423). It's a vivid image of charity done purely for Allah.
When giving openly is better
- Inspiring others: a visible donation at a fundraiser can encourage people to give.
- Setting an example: parents giving in front of their children teaches generosity.
- Zakat: many scholars say paying obligatory zakat openly is fine, since it's a known duty, like praying in congregation.
- Transparency: when you need receipts or are giving on behalf of others.
Guarding your intention
The danger with open giving is riya, doing good to be seen. In a hadith qudsi, Allah says He has no need of partners, and whoever does a deed for someone else alongside Him, He leaves them with that partner (Sahih Muslim 2985). Before giving publicly, ask yourself: would I still give this if no one ever knew? If the answer is yes, you're on safe ground. See Can I post my donations on social media as a Muslim?
