It depends on whether Hajj is already due on you. A holiday is not haram, but if you are healthy and can afford Hajj, most scholars say you should not spend that money on trips and keep putting Hajj off. If you can't afford Hajj yet, a modest, halal holiday is fine.

When does Hajj become due?

Hajj is a pillar of Islam, required once in a lifetime from every adult Muslim who is able to do it. "Able" means you are physically fit, the route is safe, and you have enough money for the trip after covering your debts, your family's needs and your essential living costs.

وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ حِجُّ ٱلْبَيْتِ مَنِ ٱسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا "And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House, for whoever is able to find thereto a way." Quran 3:97

The Prophet ﷺ told the people that Allah had made Hajj obligatory on them, and when asked whether it was every year, he made clear it was not (Sahih Muslim 1337). If you're not there yet financially, you're not sinning by waiting. See Do I have to go to Hajj if I can't afford it?

Can I delay Hajj once I can afford it?

Scholars differ here:

  • Hanafi (Abu Yusuf), Maliki and Hanbali: once you are able, Hajj is due straight away, and delaying it without a good reason is sinful.
  • Shafi'i: it may be delayed, as long as you truly intend to go and actually do it before you die.

Both views agree on one thing: nobody knows how long they have, health can change, and money can disappear. Putting Hajj first is the safer path.

So what about the beach trip?

  • Hajj money comes first. If a holiday would eat into the savings you need for Hajj this year or next, postpone the holiday.
  • Small breaks are different. A weekend away or visiting family usually doesn't compete with Hajj. Islam doesn't ask you to live without rest.
  • Hajj quotas are real. Many countries use a quota or lottery for Hajj visas, so register early and keep saving even while you wait.
  • Umrah is a lovely step. Some converts go for Umrah first to get a feel for Mecca. It's recommended, but it doesn't replace Hajj. See What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?

New Muslims and timing

If you only recently took your shahada, nobody expects you to fly to Mecca next month. Learn the basics, pray, and build a savings plan. Hajj becomes due when you are able, not on the day you convert. Many new Muslims make their first trip to the holy cities as Umrah. See Can I visit Mecca as a new Muslim?

Key points
  • Hajj is due once in a lifetime when you're healthy and can afford it.
  • Most scholars say don't delay it once you're able; Shafi'is allow a delay.
  • Don't spend Hajj savings on holidays you could postpone.
  • Short, affordable breaks are fine if Hajj isn't due yet.
Tip: Open a separate "Hajj fund" account and set up a small monthly transfer. It keeps the money safe from holiday temptations and turns a big goal into a steady habit.
