Should I read Surah al-Kahf on Fridays?

Yes, it's a recommended habit, though not an obligation. Many scholars encourage reading Surah al-Kahf (chapter 18) every Friday, based on a narration about light between two Fridays. Scholars differ on how strong that narration is, but reading Quran on a Friday is good either way. Missing it is not a sin.

Where the Friday practice comes from

The Companion Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on Friday will have light between that Friday and the next. This report is not in Bukhari or Muslim; it's recorded in later collections such as those of al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi.

  • Many scholars accept it: al-Albani and others graded it authentic, and the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools list reading al-Kahf on Friday as recommended.
  • Some are more cautious: other hadith scholars say the more reliable chains stop at Abu Sa'id himself rather than the Prophet ﷺ, or consider some versions weak.

Even the cautious view doesn't make the practice wrong. Reading any Quran is rewarded, and Friday is a blessed day. Just avoid treating it as compulsory or quoting extra "virtues" you can't verify.

What is firmly established about al-Kahf

  • Protection from the Dajjal: "If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal" (Sahih Muslim 809).
  • Tranquillity: a man was reciting al-Kahf when a cloud came down over him. The Prophet ﷺ said: "That was tranquillity which came down at the recitation of the Qur'an" (Sahih Muslim 795).
رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةًۭ وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًۭا "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance." Quran 18:10

When and how to read it

Most scholars say the time runs from sunset on Thursday until sunset on Friday, since the Islamic day starts at sunset. You can:

  • Read it in one sitting: it's 110 verses (about 12 pages), roughly 20 to 40 minutes at a steady pace.
  • Split it up: a few pages after each prayer on Friday.
  • Read a translation alongside: if your Arabic is slow, read part in Arabic and the rest in English so you understand the stories.
  • Listen if you can't read yet: listening is rewarded too, though most scholars see "reading" as reciting yourself. See Is listening to the Quran as good as reading it?

Why this surah fits a new Muslim

Al-Kahf has four stories that speak to modern life: young people holding on to faith in a hostile society, a rich man proud of his gardens, Moses learning patience from a wiser teacher, and a powerful ruler who used his power justly. Many read them as lessons about trials of faith, wealth, knowledge and power. Pick one story each Friday and reflect on it.

Friday has other Sunnah acts too, like sending extra blessings on the Prophet ﷺ (Sunan Abi Dawud 1047). See How do I send salawat on the Prophet?

Key points
  • Reading al-Kahf on Friday is recommended, not required.
  • Scholars differ on the strength of the Friday narration.
  • Memorizing its first ten verses protects from the Dajjal.
  • The window is Thursday sunset to Friday sunset.
Tip: Set a weekly phone reminder for Friday lunchtime and read ten verses at a time throughout the day. Start with the first ten, and you'll memorize them within a few weeks.
