Should I read the Quran or hadith first?

Usually the Quran first, in translation. Add a short biography of the Prophet ﷺ so the Quran's setting makes sense, and then move on to a small selection of hadith with explanation. The Quran is the central text of Islam, and hadith make more sense once you know it.

Why most beginners start with the Quran

The Quran is the core of Islam, so everything else rests on it. Reading it first gives you the foundation: who God is, why we are here, what the prophets taught and what Muslims are asked to believe and do. It's also much shorter than the hadith collections, which run to many thousands of reports.

Read it in a clear English translation, and don't worry if you can't read Arabic. See Where should I start reading the Quran as a new Muslim?

Where hadith fit in

A hadith is a report of what the Prophet ﷺ said, did or approved. Muslims believe the Prophet ﷺ was sent not only to deliver the Quran but to explain it:

وَأَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ٱلذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ "And We have sent down to you [O Prophet] the Reminder, so that you may explain to people what has been revealed for them." Quran 16:44

That's why hadith matter. The Quran tells Muslims to pray, for example, but the Prophet's example shows how. See What is a hadith?

Why hadith come second for beginners

  • Context matters: a single hadith can be misunderstood without its background and the way scholars read it.
  • Collections are huge: it's easy to get lost, or to pick out one line and draw the wrong conclusion.
  • Authenticity needs checking: scholars grade hadith by the reliability of their narrators, and not everything shared online is sound.
  • The Prophet's life gives the frame: a short biography helps you picture the setting. See Who was the Prophet Muhammad?

When you're ready for hadith, start with a small, well-known selection that comes with explanation, such as Imam al-Nawawi's collection of forty hadith, rather than reading the huge collections cold.

A simple order that works

  1. A short introduction to Islam.
  2. The Quran in translation, starting with a few chapters.
  3. A short biography of the Prophet ﷺ.
  4. A small, explained selection of hadith.
  5. Keep asking a knowledgeable person as you go.

This is a guide, not a rule, and you can mix them as it suits you. For how the two relate, see What is the difference between the Quran and hadith?

Key points
  • Most beginners start with the Quran in translation.
  • A short biography of the Prophet ﷺ gives it context.
  • The Prophet ﷺ was sent to explain the Quran (Quran 16:44), so hadith matter.
  • Start hadith with a small explained selection, not the huge collections.
Tip: If you come across a hadith online, check that it gives the book and number, and look it up on a reliable hadith site. If it still seems surprising, ask a knowledgeable person before you accept it.
