Should I sleep on my right side?

Yes, it is recommended. The Prophet ﷺ taught sleeping on the right side, and he usually put his right hand under his cheek. It is a sunnah, not an obligation, so you don't sin if you sleep any other way. Many Muslims simply start the night on the right side and say the bedtime duas.
What the Prophet ﷺ taught
The Prophet ﷺ told his companion al-Bara' ibn 'Azib: "Whenever you go to bed, perform ablution like that for the prayer, lie on your right side and say..." followed by a short dua of trust in Allah (Sahih al-Bukhari 247). He also used to place his right hand under his cheek before sleeping (Sunan Abi Dawud 5045).
The bedtime routine in short
- Wudu: make ablution if you can, as for prayer.
- Right side: lie down on it, with your right hand under your cheek.
- A short dua: Hudhaifah reported that the Prophet ﷺ would place his hand under his cheek and say, "Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya" (O Allah, in Your name I die and I live), and on waking say "Al-hamdu lillahi alladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6314).
- Shake out your bed before lying down, as taught in the hadith about the dua for sleeping (Sahih al-Bukhari 6320).
- Make it your last words: the Prophet ﷺ said that the words of the dua should be the last you say before sleeping (Sahih al-Bukhari 6311).

Do I have to stay on my right side all night?
No. The sunnah is to begin your sleep on the right side. You will roll over in the night, and that is normal. The Prophet ﷺ said that the actions of a sleeper are not recorded until he wakes, so you are not held to account for the position you roll into (Sunan Abi Dawud 4403). What you do deliberately when you lie down is what counts. If you find that you fall asleep better on your back or the other side, that is fine.
What about other positions?
Sleeping on your back or left side is not forbidden. Only lying face-down was mentioned as disliked, and scholars treat even that as disliked rather than haram. See Is it haram to sleep on my stomach?
Your comfort and health matter too. If you have back pain, a breathing problem, are pregnant or recovering from surgery, follow your doctor's advice about how to lie. Islam never asks you to harm your body.
Starting the habit
- Begin with just one thing: lying on your right side at the start of the night.
- Add one short dua once that feels natural.
- Later add wudu before bed, Ayat al-Kursi and the last three surahs if you wish.
- Sleeping on the right side is a sunnah (Sahih al-Bukhari 247).
- The Prophet ﷺ placed his right hand under his cheek (Sunan Abi Dawud 5045).
- You only need to begin on that side; rolling over is fine.
- Follow medical advice if your health needs a different position.

Yes, it can be. Inshallah means if Allah wills, so using it to hide a no misleads people. Be honest and kind with a clear no instead.
