Yes, trimming the mustache is a sunnah for Muslim men. The Prophet ﷺ listed it among the acts of fitrah (natural hygiene), and scholars say it shouldn't be left for more than 40 days. Keep it short enough that it doesn't cover your upper lip.

Part of the fitrah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Five things are part of the fitrah: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the mustache, clipping the nails and plucking the armpit hair" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5889). Fitrah means the natural, clean state Allah created people in:

فِطْرَتَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّتِى فَطَرَ ٱلنَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا "...the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created people..." Quran 30:30

He ﷺ also said: "Do the opposite of the polytheists: let the beard grow and trim the mustache" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5892). So the beard and the mustache are treated differently: the beard is left, the mustache is kept short.

How short should it be?

Scholars agree it should be trimmed so it doesn't hang over the lip. Beyond that, they differ slightly:

  • Maliki and Shafi'i scholars: trim it so the edge of the upper lip shows; shaving it off completely is disliked. Imam Malik was strict about shaving it.
  • Hanafi and Hanbali scholars: trimming it very short is fine, and some see it as better.

Either way, a neat, short mustache over a full beard is the classic sunnah look. A long "handlebar" mustache without a beard is the opposite of the hadith.

The 40-day limit

Anas ibn Malik said a time limit was set for trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpits and shaving the pubic hair: not to leave them for more than forty nights (Sahih Muslim 258). Many people simply do it every week or two, often on Friday. See Is it okay to cut my nails at night?

Why it matters

A short mustache stays cleaner when you eat and drink, and it doesn't trap food or water. It also makes wudu easier. It's one of several small grooming habits; see What is fitrah hygiene in Islam? and Do Muslims have to shave their pubic hair?

Key points
  • Trimming the mustache is a sunnah of fitrah.
  • Keep it off the upper lip; schools differ on how short.
  • Don't leave it more than 40 days.
  • Beard is grown, mustache is trimmed.
Tip: Small beard scissors or a trimmer with a short guard make this a two-minute job. Add it to your Friday routine with a shower, nails and perfume.
