What are the houris in Jannah?

The houris (hur al-'ayn) are pure companions Allah creates in Paradise as part of the reward for believers, described in the Quran as beautiful, with large, lovely eyes. They are one blessing among many, and the Quran describes them in a gentle, dignified way that is very different from the popular "72 virgins" stereotype.

What the word means

Hur refers to the striking contrast of white and dark in the eyes, and 'ayn means wide, beautiful eyes. The Quran mentions them a few times, always briefly and modestly.

حُورٌ مَّقْصُورَٰتٌ فِى ٱلْخِيَامِ "Fair ones reserved in pavilions." Quran 55:72

Elsewhere they are compared to "pearls well-protected" (Quran 56:22–23), and Allah says He will marry the believers to them (Quran 44:54). The Prophet ﷺ said that if one woman of Paradise looked toward the earth, she would fill everything between them with light and fragrance (Sahih al-Bukhari 2796). The point is that Paradise holds a beauty beyond anything we know.

What about the "72 virgins"?

The number 72 doesn't appear in the Quran. It comes from a narration that many hadith scholars consider weak. Even where numbers are mentioned in reports, scholars stress that the details of the unseen are beyond our imagination, and that turning this into a crude headline misses the point of the texts entirely. See What are the levels of Jannah?

Do women get houris too?

Some modern writers note that the word hur can be read in a gender-neutral way, as "pure companions". The classical view is that houris are female companions for men, while believing women are promised whatever they desire and a spouse who delights them. Many scholars also said that the righteous women of this world will be even more beautiful and honoured than the houris, because of their faith, prayer and patience.

Keeping it in perspective

  • The Quran's descriptions of Paradise are about joy, peace and honour, not just physical pleasure.
  • Jealousy and resentment don't exist in Jannah (Quran 15:47), so spouses won't feel hurt.
  • The greatest reward of all is seeing Allah, which is far above every other blessing. See What is Jannah?
  • If a non-Muslim friend brings up houris, answer calmly from the texts. See Do Muslims believe in heaven and hell?
Key points
  • Houris are pure, beautiful companions created by Allah in Paradise.
  • The Quran mentions them briefly and with dignity (Quran 44:54, 55:72, 56:22–23).
  • The "72 virgins" figure isn't in the Quran and comes from a weak narration.
  • The highest reward in Jannah is seeing Allah, not any physical pleasure.
Tip: When a topic about the unseen feels strange, read the verses in context rather than quotes on social media. Surah ar-Rahman (55) and Surah al-Waqi'ah (56) give a full, beautiful picture of Paradise.
