What are the levels of Jannah?

Yes, Jannah (Paradise) has levels: 100 of them, according to an authentic hadith. The highest and best is al-Firdaws, and the distance between each level is like the distance between heaven and earth. The Quran also mentions several names for Paradise, but most scholars see these as names and descriptions of Paradise rather than a fixed ranked list of seven.

The 100 levels

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Paradise has one-hundred grades... and the distance between each of two grades is like the distance between the Heaven and the Earth. So, when you ask Allah (for something), ask for Al-firdaus which is the best and highest part of Paradise." A narrator added that above it is the Throne of God, and from it the rivers of Paradise flow (Sahih al-Bukhari 2790).

The Quran confirms that people will be ranked differently in the Hereafter:

وَمَن يَأْتِهِۦ مُؤْمِنًا قَدْ عَمِلَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ ٱلدَّرَجَـٰتُ ٱلْعُلَىٰ "But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]." Quran 20:75

It also says the Hereafter "is greater in degrees [of difference]" than this world (Quran 17:21).

Names of Paradise in the Quran

You'll often see lists online of "the seven or eight levels of Jannah". These usually come from names the Quran uses for Paradise:

  • Jannat al-Firdaws: "the Gardens of Paradise" (Quran 18:107), the highest level.
  • Jannat 'Adn: "gardens of perpetual residence" (Quran 9:72).
  • Jannat an-Na'im: "the Gardens of Pleasure" (Quran 56:12).
  • Jannat al-Ma'wa: "the Garden of Refuge" (Quran 53:15).
  • Dar as-Salam: "the Home of Peace" (Quran 10:25).
  • Jannat al-Khuld: "the Garden of Eternity" (Quran 25:15).

Scholars differ on whether these are separate levels or different names for the one Paradise. Many say they describe Paradise as a whole, apart from al-Firdaws, which the hadith clearly names as the highest. No authentic hadith gives a ranked list of these names, so it's best not to treat online charts as certain.

Even the lowest level is amazing

The Prophet ﷺ described the last person to leave Hell and enter Paradise. God tells him he will have what equals the world "and ten times as much", and this person is said to be the lowest in rank among the people of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 6571). If that's the lowest, imagine the highest.

What raises your level

Key points
  • An authentic hadith says Paradise has 100 levels.
  • Al-Firdaws is the highest, right below God's Throne.
  • Quranic names like 'Adn and Na'im may describe Paradise as a whole.
  • Ask God for al-Firdaws in your dua.
Tip: Aim high. When you make dua for Paradise, ask for al-Firdaws by name, as the Prophet ﷺ taught. God is generous, and asking for the best costs you nothing.
