The rivers of Jannah are four kinds of rivers named in the Quran: water that never goes stale, milk that never spoils, wine that is delicious and doesn't intoxicate, and pure honey. Hadith also mention al-Kawthar, a special river given to the Prophet ﷺ, and rivers that flow from al-Firdaws, the highest level.

The four rivers in the Quran

Surah Muhammad gives the clearest description:

مَّثَلُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ٱلَّتِى وُعِدَ ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ ۖ فِيهَآ أَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّن مَّآءٍ غَيْرِ ءَاسِنٍ وَأَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّن لَّبَنٍ لَّمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ طَعْمُهُۥ وَأَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّنْ خَمْرٍ لَّذَّةٍ لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ وَأَنْهَـٰرٌ مِّنْ عَسَلٍ مُّصَفًّى "Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey…" Quran 47:15
  • Water: fresh and clear, never stagnant or smelly.
  • Milk: its taste never turns sour.
  • Wine: pure pleasure with no headache, no loss of mind and no sin (Quran 37:47). Giving up alcohol here is part of the reward there. See Can Muslims drink alcohol?
  • Honey: purified, with no wax or impurities.

Al-Kawthar

Allah told the Prophet ﷺ, "Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar" (Quran 108:1). He described it as a river in Paradise whose banks are domes of hollow pearls (Sahih al-Bukhari 4964). Many narrations also describe a Pool (hawd) fed by al-Kawthar where believers will drink on the Day of Judgement, whiter than milk and sweeter than honey.

Rivers from al-Firdaws

The Prophet ﷺ told believers to ask Allah for al-Firdaws, the middle and highest part of Paradise, "from it the rivers of Paradise gush forth" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2790). See What are the levels of Jannah?

Rivers on earth "from Jannah"

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Sayhan, Jayhan, the Euphrates and the Nile are all among the rivers of Paradise" (Sahih Muslim 2839). Scholars explain this in different ways: some say their source is truly linked to Paradise, while others say it praises their blessing and the faith of the lands they water. Either way, they are not the rivers of Paradise themselves.

"Rivers flowing beneath"

The Quran repeats "gardens beneath which rivers flow" dozens of times. It's the Quran's favorite picture of Jannah: green, cool and alive. For the bigger picture, see What is Jannah?

Key points
  • Four rivers: water, milk, non-intoxicating wine and honey (Quran 47:15).
  • Al-Kawthar is the Prophet's ﷺ river (Quran 108:1).
  • Paradise's rivers flow from al-Firdaws (Sahih al-Bukhari 2790).
  • Four earthly rivers are linked to Paradise (Sahih Muslim 2839).
Tip: Next time you drink cold water on a hot day, pause and remember Quran 47:15. It's a simple way to turn an everyday moment into longing for Jannah.
