What do I need to start wearing hijab?

You only need a few basics: two or three scarves, an underscarf, some pins and loose clothes you already own. You don't need a new wardrobe or special skills. Start simple, learn one or two styles, and build up slowly.
The starter kit
- 2–3 scarves. Jersey is the easiest for beginners: it stretches, grips and needs few pins. Add a cotton or viscose scarf for warm days. Rectangular scarves around 70 x 180 cm cover the chest well.
- An underscarf. A tube cap or bonnet keeps hair in and stops the scarf from slipping. This is the single most useful item.
- Pins. A small box of safety pins and straight hijab pins, or magnetic pins if you worry about snagging.
- Neutral colours. Black, beige, grey and navy go with almost anything you own.

Check your clothes, not just your head
Hijab is more than a scarf. The Quran tells believing women to draw their head coverings over their chests:
So go through your wardrobe: long-sleeved tops, loose trousers or skirts, longer cardigans and maxi dresses. Most new Muslim women find they already own half of what they need. Fill gaps one piece at a time.
Learn one style first
Pick one simple wrap and practise it at home in front of a mirror for a few days. Video tutorials are a big help. Your first attempts may take ten minutes; within a week most women are down to two. An instant (slip-on) hijab is a good backup for rushed mornings.
Prepare your heart and your people
The practical side is easy compared with the emotional side. Make dua, set an intention, and pick a start date if that helps you. It's fine to begin gradually; see Do I have to wear hijab right away after becoming Muslim? The Prophet ﷺ said that the deeds most loved by Allah are the ones done consistently, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464). If family reactions worry you, see How do I tell my family I'm going to wear hijab?
- A few scarves, an underscarf and pins are enough to begin.
- Jersey scarves are easiest for beginners.
- Loose, long clothes you already own are part of hijab.
- Start steady and simple; consistency matters more than perfection.
