What do I tell coworkers who ask why I skip Christmas?

Usually one or two friendly sentences are enough. Most coworkers ask out of curiosity, not criticism. Say that Christmas isn't part of your faith, mention that you respect it and wish them a lovely break, and let the conversation move on. You can share more if they seem interested.

Why people ask

In many workplaces in Europe and the USA, almost everyone takes part in Christmas lunches, cards and decorations, so a colleague who doesn't can raise questions. Treat the question as a chance to be friendly rather than a challenge. You don't have to defend yourself or explain every ruling.

Short answers you can use

  • "I'm Muslim, so Christmas isn't part of my faith, but I'm glad you enjoy it."
  • "We have our own celebrations, called Eid. I'd love to tell you about them."
  • "I don't celebrate, but I hope you have a wonderful time with your family."

Whether to say "Merry Christmas" back is a separate question where scholars differ. See Can I say "Merry Christmas" to my coworkers?

"But don't you believe in Jesus?"

This is a common follow-up, and a lovely one to answer. Muslims love and honour Jesus (Isa) as one of the greatest prophets. He was born miraculously to Mary, who has a whole chapter of the Quran named after her. Muslims do not believe he is the son of God.

Allah gives you good news of a Word from Him, his name will be the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary; honoured in this world and the Hereafter, and he will be one of those nearest [to Allah].'" Quran 3:45

The Quran also tells how baby Jesus spoke from the cradle and said, "I am truly a servant of Allah" (Quran 19:30). That shared love for Jesus is a good starting point for a friendly chat.

If someone keeps pushing

If a coworker jokes or presses you, stay calm and smile. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say what is good or keep quiet (Sahih al-Bukhari 6018). You can say, "Everyone has their own traditions, and I'm happy with mine," and change the subject. Never criticise their holiday.

Many Muslims also bring something to the office at Eid, such as dates or sweets. See Can I invite my coworkers to an Eid celebration?

Key points
  • Keep your answer short, friendly and true.
  • Muslims honour Jesus and Mary but don't celebrate Christmas.
  • Say what is good or stay quiet if someone pushes.
  • Share your own celebrations to build understanding.
Tip: Write your one-line answer in advance and say it the same way every time. It keeps you relaxed, and the questions usually end after the first week of December.
